I haven't heard of much on that list, but Xavier Rudd is really good.

I just discovered a badass jazz fusion band called Niacin. Extremely heavy jazz, emphasis on bass and Hammond B-3 organ. Especially recommended: Their cover of Birdland.

I hadn't heard anything about it until you brought it up. Apparently it's a children's album. Medeski must have had a lot of fun on that Baby Loves Jazz project (an album I plan on picking up when I become a parent).

Medeski and others seem extremely interested of late in indoctrinating children with a love of jazz. I say projects like this can only do good. Now that I've been made abreast of this album, I'm extremely interested in checking it out. It sounds like a really fun album.

The Hillside music festival was great. The above pictures are a few of the highlights, in order from top to bottom:

1. The Abrams Brothers
2. Shout Out Out Out Out
3. Wintersleep
4. City and Colour (Dallas Green)
5. Xavier Rudd
6. Xavier Rudd again

Xavier Rudd ended the show after 10 hours and he was without a doubt, the best performance of the entire night. Absolutey amazing.

Now that we're more than two months in, what's everyone's favourite releases of '08 so far? (Ironically not a single one of my top five is by an artist I had even HEARD of before 2008. They were all just downloaded on a whim):

Hol Baumann - Human
Kyte - Kyte
Surrounded - The Nautilus Years
Talkingmakesnosense - The Winter Drones
Balmorhea - Rivers Arms

If you like QOTSA, try out Kyuss. Stoner metal at its apex.

Amen to that. While you could say bands like Black Sabbath created the genre, they were usually somewhere else on the spectrum, only occasionally dipping onto that side (Sweet Leaf anyone?). Kyuss, in the early 90's, showed the entire world how Stoner Rock was supposed to be done. My favourite track is probaly Odyssey, from Welcome to Sky Valley. Their half of the Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age split is also severely awesome.

And while you're at it, get the Desert Sessions as well, the real birthplace of Queens of the Stone Age.

Been listening to full tracks on last.fm tonight. I highly recommend checking out Skerik's Syncopated Taint Septet - that's about as kickass as jazz gets. Specific tracks: "Fry His Ass" and "Go to Hell Mr. Bush" are both great.
