I don't have an album, but the new Smashing Pumpkins song "Tarantula" was abso-freakin'-lutely worth the seven-year wait. Siamese dreamin': commence. YEOW!

Black Majesty and Vanishing Point.

Some good local metal. Saw Vanishing Point play last week, supporting Dragonforce... and Dragonforce completely rocked my socks off.

I just got the leak of the new Chemical Brothers album We Are the Night and it totally blew me away because I really didn't know what to expect after Push the Button. PTB was definitely an album that grew on you over time, but was still pretty disappointing overall. WATN has so many insanely good tracks, Burst Generator particularly kicks about a billion different kinds of ass, and the best part is that it has so much of what is dangerously lacking in some much other music today, grooviness.

Similarly, if people still haven't checked out The Field's From Here we go Sublime (http://www.metacritic.com/music/bests/2007.shtml) then they're missing out on something really spectacular.

In a proggish mood the past couple of days. Listening to:

Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Bot Planet

65daysofstatic's new album is them saying "Hey! We should sound more like Explosions in the Sky!" and what comes out is really quite good, but a lot less aggressive than their other stuff.

As of late, I've been listening to these albums:

Open Hand - "You and Me"
Stone Temple Pilots - "Core" and "Purple"
Tears For Fears - "Best Of"
Duran Duran - "Best Of"
2 Skinnee J's - "Sexy Karate" and "Volumizer"

Others, too... but those are on heavy circulation right now.

Aw, shame that the other topic went, but I blame myself completely for not posting in it as much as I should've been.

Anyway, here's a list of the stuff I've listened to over the past few months and my thoughts. I'll include the genre of everything too.

Everclear - So Much for the Afterglow (Cowpunk/Power Pop)
Dinosaur Jr. - Bug (Indie/Rock)
Rush - Snakes & Arrows (Progressive Rock/Rock)
The Fall of Troy - Manipulator (Post-Hardcore)
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (Progressive Rock)
I Would Set Myself On Fire for You - s/t (Emo)
A Day in Black and White - My Heroes Have Always Killed Cowboys (Emo)
Pg. 99 - Document #5, Document #7, Document #8 (Emo/Screamo)
Circle Takes the Square/pg. 99 - Document #13 [split] (Emo/Screamo)
...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes (Indie)
La Dispute - Vancouver (Hardcore)
Angel Hair - Pregnant With the Senior Class (Emo/Screamo)
I Wrote Haikus About Cannibalism in Your High School Year Book (Emo)
Behemoth - The Apostasy (Black/Death Metal)
Sigh - Hangman's Hymn (Black Metal)
Pig Destroyer - Phantom Limb (Grind)

Everclear's So Much for the Afterglow is the band's best effort. Porcupine Tree's latest release is amazing. I Would Set Myself On Fire for You's s/t is the best Emo release I've heard. Pg. 99 is one of my favorite bands but it's a shame they split up. They had some of the best lyrics I've ever read. Circle Take the Square's split with them is amazing, as everything both bands touch turns to gold. La Dispute's Vancouver is catchy and fun, but I think it lacks the emotion you can find on some of the other albums in the same genre, like A Day in Black and White's release, or say, I Would Set Myself On Fire for You's s/t.

As for the metal releases on my list, Sigh's album is the best of the year so far, or, second best, as Fear of a Blank Planet is first. Behemoth's album does not disappoint and is a huge step up from their previous release. Pig Destroyer's Phantom Limb is their second best release yet.

Other than that, the other albums were good. I found Manipulator to be a huge grower. I didn't care for it much at first, but like any Fall of Troy album or song, it becomes amazing after a few listens. And then there's Dinosaur Jr. - Bug, which contains my favorite song that the band's done, Freak Scene.

There are a couple more, but I can't think of them at the moment. I recommend all of them.

Recent purchases:

Mew - And The Glass Handed Kites, Frengers
Aereogramme - My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go
Chroma Key - Graveyard Mountain Home

Mew is just... wow. I can't believe I've gone this long without listening to them. It's like a combination of Sigur Rós, Radiohead, and Ride all thrown into one overwhelming band. The songs on "And The Glass Handed Kites" flow together so seamlessly while still retaining an individual sound on each track. On the first listen, I was already into track 5 before realizing that the song even changed. Highly, highly recommended especially if you're a fan of Sigur Rós, Radiohead, or similar bands.

I particularly enjoyed Aereogramme's album as well. Chroma Key is still growing on me.

I don't particularly like to rip on other people's taste in music... but yours is really lacking, Astro. Srsly.

Personally...

Been listening to a great deal of Soundgarden lately. Superunknown is a stellar album, assuming you're willing to look past Black Hole Sun. Badmotorfinger is also fairly underrated, as I have been finding out. Been rounding things off with a portion of Frank Zappa and Black Label Society.

I'm pretty sure that ever since they totally redeemed themselves with The Black Parade last year, which was an enormously good album for what it was, it's been all right to like MCR unless you're talking to someone still clinging to general public opinion.

I just went out and picked up one of those really pricey optical audio cables to finally take advantage of my big surround system hooked up to the DVD player. Right now the only 5.1 DVD audio album I own is "This Binary Universe" which is an entirely new experience in surround, I intend to pick up the DTS versions of PT's "Deadwing" and "In Absentia" really soon as well.

Its going to kick so much ass.
