Fifth Non-Prolific FAQers Tournament: Nominations

Page 1 of 2 | Last Page
Meowthnum1 | Posted 5/1/2008 5:12:57 AM | message detail
Hey hey, and welcome to the nominations topic! The goal of this topic is to nominate writers who you think are worthy enough to enter this tournament. You'll want to pick writers based off their work as a whole, not just one file. You're certainly welcome to nominate yourself as well. Everybody is allowed to have up to six nominations. You don't have to nominate six people, but please don't nominate more than that (or use alts to do so; you can't be that tricky! We'll find out!). As a reminder, please don't nominate anyone for images; only written work is considered. Also, and this should be obviously, but please only nominate non-prolifics. Otherwise, this would not, in fact, be a non-prolific tournament. One other note: Please please please link to the CRP of the author you're nominating.

Try to nominate who you think will win this tournament. Everyone who was nominated will be considered and seeded appropriately. If we get more than 64 nominations, the 64 writers with the most nominations will be entered. If a plethora of writers have only one nomination, then they will be entered on a first come, first served basis. This is also how they will be seeded in the tournament bracket itself (cf. http://www.freewebs.com/tjackson/2007npbracket.html for last year's bracket).

If you have any questions, please feel free to post them in this topic.

Nominations will be open until say May 10. Ready set go!

Summary: Six nominations per person. No alts. Please remember to link to the author's CRP (contributor recognition page).

It's also going to feel odd now that I can't compete in this anymore.

Crazy that you need 4MB to be considered prolific these days. Why, back in my day, 350KB was enough to get me on the prolific list. And the only guy with more than 4MB was Kao Megura.

Yeah, his BoF2 handbook is godly. It's a shame he went and found religion. ;) Speaking of FAQ pioneers:

Mynock - http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/255.html

He also wrote an FF2us guide that never made it onto this site. Note: when reading his guides here, don't hold it against him that GameFAQs decided to retroactively butcher his work to make it fit the 79 columns. (In fact, I'd advise finding the latest version of his guides on other websites, for maximum reading enjoyment.)

TripleJump - http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/38449.html

Those three are the first names that come into my mind. Shame I can't participate this year, I broke the barrier late last year.

Regarding The Mynock and my last post... Since his FF2us guide is much less abundant on the web than his FF3us and CT guides, here's a link:

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/9311/ff2walkthrough.txt

(I trust this tournament doesn't have the silly restriction that all of an author's valid works must be on GameFAQs.)

Bah, that's all silliness. :P

It turns out The Mynock also has a guide to Super Mario RPG:

http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Lair/9311/RPG.txt

And for the curious, "StarCreator" here updated that guide a couple years later:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/1549.html

Please forgive my fragmentation. If necessary, I'll delete my posts and combine all this into a single Mynock Extravaganza post.
Meowthnum1 | Posted 5/3/2008 5:14:20 AM | message detail
By the way, I think this was implied, but please do not nominate AstroBlue or Phoenix 1911. Since they already won this tournament, they're being excluded from the formal competition, but we'll have the exhibition matches at the end of the tournament, pitting either the winner of the tournament versus those two in a three-way match, or having a mini-tourney with the first and second place finishers of this year's tournament and those two. Either way, they're guaranteed to come back for the grand finale of the tournament, but not for the tournament itself.

Mynock is another long-time favorite of mine, so I'm glad to see him mentioned. I had almost forgotten about him. On the subject of FAQers with works off the site, one of my favorite (and arguably best) FAQers of all time is Jarulf, who wrote the definitive guide for Diablo. His work was so amazing that Blizzard still links to it from their website (http://www.battle.net/files.shtml#diablo). To this day I have still never seen a more impressive work.

I honestly recommend that everyone check out this guide if they haven't before, especially anyone interested in technical or hacking-based guides. It's one thing to describe gameplay, but it's entirely something else to hack a game and discover things that have never been discovered before. It's even rarer that someone can then synthesize that data into a well written document, but this guy did it.
