Less than 24 hours after posting my first guide, I too received e-mail from supercheats.com. They may be reputable -- they were able to extract my e-mail address from my guide; not impossible, but I didn't make it plain either -- but I've seen their interface and content duplicated on too many other sites.

Erring to caution, I'm declining any site listed at (or linking to) http://www.cheatserver.com/ for now. FWIW.

I think SuperCheats is one of those sites who keeps an eye on GameFAQs What's New page to find new FAQs.

Whats wrong with CheatsServer?

Probably nothing wrong with Cheat Server. They're only serving links.

It's just that every one of the sites they list, Supercheats among them, has nearly the same content, word for word, without attributing the origins or source. The web and the games I looked up aren't old enough to presume legal "Public Domain" status (and if it's a stipulation of some site's ToS, I want nothing to do with it), so the missing attribution sets off alarm bells for me. That's all.

I would be leery of any site that doesn't work to properly credit its contributors. It takes more work on the part of the webmaster--and more coding--but it's the least a site can do in return for the content you work so hard to provide.

Yeah, but only the lazy thieves don't change the content to some extent to hide their thievery. On the other hand, most thieves are lazy, so it sort of works out.

Anybody heard of a site called For Gamers By Gamers? I received a really professional sounding e-mail from the owner. I checked it out, and it looks horrible. It looks like it is a cross between an online retailer (who he claims is government recognized as a legitimate business), and a FAQs section. Would you recommend a yes or no for this site? The URL is:

I haven't made up my mind about FGBG. On one hand it has a horribly cheapo look and no content besides what the president's written; then again, they said it's undergoing renovations and they might just be expanding into that type of coverage. Either way, it doesn't look like they'll be putting a messageboard up anytime soon, so I'm holding off.

Well, I let FGBG host my guides, and they converted them to RTF with too-small margins, thus royally screwing up all the ASCII tables and maps (not to mention the art). So you may want to avoid them until they fix that.

Okay, new site to ask about.

I just recieved an e-mail with this site inside of it: http://www.videogamechat.net

And here's the complete e-mail, including what they'll do with the guide if I allow them to post it:

-----------------------------

Hey there. =)

I wanted to contact you about the possibliity of using your Skies of Arcadia guide on our my site. Of all the Skies of Arcadia FAQs up on GameFAQs, I found yours to be the cleanest and most detailed.

The site I run is located at http://www.videogamechat.net . It's a new site that was only recently went live a couple of weeks ago, and we're currently in the process of creating content. The site is geared towards a more mature and grown up gaming demographic, and we aim to celebrate genuinely good games over popular ones.

So that's where your guide comes in.

I want to use it in a slightly different fashion though. I don't want to simply post it on the site as a simple text link. It will have seperate pages of it's own, linked together thoughtfully and with a graphically tidy layout. If you're interested in helping me put the design together, you're free to involve yourself in it as much as you want, but you don't have to - we have a fair few design people capable of doing so.

If you're interested, I hope to hear from your soon.

Edit: I was looking around GameFAQs just now, and noticed that you have quite a lot of other FAQs, but I don't want to sound like a beggar and ask you if I can use most of them. *laughs* I'll wait to see what you say about this one first.

Think it's a legit site?

It looks clean. Seems to be fairly decent. However, here's two e-mails I got from them; one for a new game, one for a game going on eight years old.

Game 1: Dead Rising

Hey there. =)

Game 2: Nocturne

Hey there. =)

I wanted to contact you about the possibliity of using your Nocturne guide on our my site. Of all the Nocturne FAQs up on GameFAQs, I found yours to be the cleanest and most detailed.

It stands to reason I could've received the same form e-mail as you in regards to Dead Rising. But the second e-mail I got from him is exactly the same, and last time I checked, there was only one guide for Nocturne, yet it's the same e-mail. I have a feeling he is using a standard form e-mail which isn't all that great, or he doesn't bother to check on a game when he sends an e-mail.

The only difference between yours and mine is yours as the added thing about being a beggar.

SuperCheats apparently didn't get my 4 previous replies to their email: "we didn't hear from you, but would you consider..."

At first I didn't care, but then after I posted a new FAQ recently, they mailed again, I replied, still no answer... I use GMail ffs, it's not like some weird domain that would get insta-junked.

I hate their messy layout - plus anything with "cheat" in the site name rubs me the wrong way. So they're getting the thumbs down from me. In fact this motivated me to select Restricted Access and only allow GameFAQs to host my stuff. Makes life much simpler.

Is there going to be an updated list anytime soon? I checked the links on the top of the page and some of them didn't work.

Also, maybe we could list specifically for the sites whether they just copy guides without permission or actually plagarise them?

Today, I got an e-mail asking to use one of my FAQs in http://www.cheatcodes.com/ . While I've never heard of the site, their conduct seemed heavily unprofessional, and it even came from an outside-of-the-site adress. Basically, what I got was:

can i post your faq on www.cheatcodes.com? PLEASE

I got an e-mail from SuperCheats.com requesting permission for my Final Fantasy XII walkthrough but the only thing I've written was an Equipment and Abilities FAQ for FFXII so I replied asking if that was what he ment. The next day I get another e-mail from him saying that he posted my walkthrough. It also had a link to where my FAQ could be found on the site, so I checked it out. Nothing seemed to be changed but I just had never actually granted permission. Anybody have any suggestions as to what I should do?

It depends on what you want.

If you don't mind Supercheats having your FAQ, do nothing.

If you mind, write them a civil E-mail, explaining that you had never actually granted permission and you want your FAQ taken down.

After that, see what happens.

Forweg, if you really did win the award, and periodically bug the admins about it on the message board, than it'll come, though GamerHelp is notoriously slow, and sometimes misplace the contributers, which makes the aforementioned bugging of the site admins needed.

Good luck with that.

Wow it feels so weird to look at this old thread from almost 2 years ago. I am out of the FAQing game now, so i'll just clear upone issue.

1st Post
I know this isn't the right place to ask, but does someone know why was Michael Sarich (topic creator) banned?

Yes I know, I have the bad habit of being TOO curious, but if someone knows... Thanks!

2nd Post
He made an imp account of an admin.... then went to MBH begging not to be banned.

Up until that point I dont think anyone even knew the admin imp account existed.

He made it, but was hoping that no one would notice, when it got set to Pending Review, he freaked out >_>

I made the account, then spoke to another - more prevalant than myself - GameFAQs member saying "LOL i made a #account name# account of GFAQs". I got the response "Dude, you will get usermap axed. So, naturally I got onto MBH (not the best spot but I had no Lead Mods or admins from here on my MSN list) and begged for the account to be deleted and that be it.

Unfortunately, I was usermap axed and IP banned for either 3 or 6 months, I cannot remember.

Oh well, nice to see everyone again I guess, although I wont be around that often ^_^

I have write quite a few Faqs in the past year and some FAQs are posted in the GameFaqs / Neoseeker / Ign / Supercheats..... Now i just discovered that all my FAQs are also posted in 1UP/My Cheats site, for which i only had permission to use one of them, after they had posted the FAq i did give permission i did see how the manage the faqs, and didn't really liked how they deal with you, so let that FAq stay there since i already agree by email, other times they did asked for permission to post my other faqs and i did say no...

Just few minutes ago a friend said that she saw one of my FAQS there and i went to see, and they are all there, they put status like the FAQ is complete, when i still working on it...

I did send an email to the 2 people that did contacted me months ago, but i doubt that will do anything, does anyone know how i can do to contact the site administardor or anyone know the email to the site administrador....

Right now i'm very piss, so any help would be appreciated.

Crucial question:

When you agreed to let them host that one FAQ, did the agreement have any statement or clause which would give them rights to any other past or future works?

If so, you won't have a leg to stand on.

I found this thread just now, after checking my referrals and noticing that someone found my site through it. I read a post about 10 pages back, which refers to the site that I run, http://www.videogamechat.net

The first post, by PeTeRL90, about the use of his Skies of Arcadia walkthrough, was entirely legit, but I have absolutely NO idea who this JPaterson guy is, as I have NEVER requested Dead Rising guides from anyone, and I've never even HEARD of a game called Nocturne.

If you are worried about the legitimacy of the site, there you are free to check it out. 99% of our content is written by our own staff, and the stuff that isn't (such as Peter Elliot's wonderful Ico plot guide) was used ONLY with their permission.

As a professional writer myself, respecting other people's work is very important to me, as I perfectly understand how cheated someone would feel if somebody plagiarized their works.

Hey guys, if you didn't hear cheat cc has filed a lawsuit against an independent gaming publisher for infringing on his cheat codes. You can read the article here - http://www.gamespact.com/article.php.

The gaming community needs your help. If you had a faq/walkthrough which cheat cc stole without your consent then please share your story here - http://www.gamespact.com/backup.php.

The webmaster is a friend of mine and is danger of losing all his sites. Hopefully we can get enough evidence to shut down cheat cc once and for all.

I looked for anything of mine, but didn't find any; sorry I can't lend more legitimacy to this crap allegation. However, SOng's FFXII guide has been CCCopied, if he'd write in about it. I looked through some of the comments and it was mostly just talking, not much proof-wise.
