Tenth Prolific FAQers Tourney - Division 1, Round 1

Devin Morgan | Posted 7/3/2007 5:00:10 AM | message detail
Alright, welcome to the tenth installment of this board's Prolific FAQers Tournament! Many of you have been around for past rounds, so you should know how it all works by now. For those of you who have come along since last July, take a moment to read the rules and guidelines on the bracket page (link is below). This time, the tourney is smaller than the past few rounds, with only 64 people on the bracket. It made sense to do that since there are only 83 prolific writers right now, and larger brackets tend to make things a bit too cluttered. Anyway, with not much more to say, let's get this tourney started...

The bracket, which contains CRP links to all competing authors (click on their names), can be found at the following URL:

http://web.njit.edu/~dbm7/pbracket10.htm

Good luck to everyone!

64 - Karpah (hardest match here, but Bec's humor and style edge this one out)
33 - Nemesis (wow I voted for Nemesis)
49 - Dallas (I like both quite a bit, but Dallas has this one because he's still one of the site's best)
48 - Gray Fox (DJellybean's work has aged terribly, meanwhile Gray Fox is one of the better up and coming writers)
8 - BSulpher (okay do I really need to explain this... it's Sulpher)
40 - TestaALT (format especially on this one...)
9 - SOng (another one which I feel no need to explain)
41 - Apathetic Aardvark (I <3 AA's FF7 guide among other things, he has this on format too)

Sorry for the last post, I'm gonna actually go into detail why I picked whom, so I can give the writers a reason for my votes. I hate just empty voting for people.

1 - A l e x - Way too much detail in his work, it's unfortunate Karpah had to go against him, but she seems to be winning at the moment. A l e x puts a TON of effort into his guides, be it the ASCII art, which isn't over cluttered like some works on the site, plus all his guides are heavily detailed. Karpah's also a solid writer, but with the amount of work A l e x has done, he gets my vote. Karpah in my opinion has great info, but her layout could use some toning up. There's nothing wrong with it and it's only my opinion, as simple is always best, but some light touch ups could help. Same goes for A l e x, I noticed his Tales of Symphonia guide for one was a bit off compared to his others.

33 - Nemesis - I think anyone can agree that Nemesis just gets the clear vote here, mostly due to that Final Fantasy III guide everyone remembers Spanettone for. I can't read Italian, but a guide should NEVER be 1500KB, there's absolutely 0 reason. I can see some newer RPGs, like Final Fantasy XII being how big they are and such, but a game made in 1994(?) does NOT require 1500 KB, that's just empty KB. As for the rest of his guides, he needs some definite layout work, just a mess to look at. Nemesis has some ok guides himself, not a real fan of him, but he just wins this due to Spanettone just over all being appalling to even consider.

16 - Syonyx - Syonyx has a lot more work, but more doesn't always equal immediately better. In this case, it does. Dallas has some decent guides, but Syonyx clearly takes the cake here. I liked his info more and his layout was nice. His Intelligent Qube FAQ scared the living hell out of me, 2,000 KB, but I'm going to assume like a Picross game, these things have ridiculous outcomes, so...yeah. Over all, he has better work, more of it and Dallas is just getting older and older in work, it's harder to compare him to newer writers when his guides haven't been updated/edited in 5-6 years. He needs to update his layout and clean it up a bit, but other than that, I don't see anything wrong.

17 - DJellybean - DJellybean takes the vote, even though he's an older writer, just for sheer information and quality in his guides. It's really hard to say no to him, the layout, info, etc are all great, I don't see where he could improve. As for Gray Fox, he needs to edit his layout. Most of his guides are either breaking my browser or have little to no layout at all. You want a consistent layout, nothing too cluttered, however I will applaud you for a 1660 KB FFXII walkthrough that doesn't rape it with empty KB, just useful info. I loved it. However a basic layout to make it look cleaner would've been awesome. Gray's a good writer, but editing skills would make him perfect. For now, Dingo wins my vote.

8 - BSulpher - Ugh, who's this smuck and how can anyone write THAT many NES FAQs, this guy's not human :P No I digress, Brian takes the clear vote here. Just the sheer amount of work he's contributed, along with how many FAQs he's covered to help the NES project and other things, the guy writes to help, that's what this site's all about. Absolutely 0 filler KB in his guides, he keeps a nice, clean layout and gets everything covered with as much as possible, without rambling like some people (i.e. myself >_>;). As for CAHowell, I really liked his stuff. He's got some good info in his guides, a nice to the point writer and his layout's also nice to look at. Unfortunately, Brian just wins this do to sheer work and quality in his guides, it's really hard to top him, but there's nothing wrong with CAHowell. Keep up the good work :)

40 - TestaALT - Testa clearly wins here. MNeidengard only has written for a handful of Super Robot Taisen games, which they're detailed, but they have absolutely no layout, very little editing, it's like he just wrote and did line breaks here and there, then submitted it. He also fills the guide with pointless story text that needlessly ups the KB and time you have to browse the guide trying to find the info you need. It's fine to do this, I'm guilty myself in my FF2 SNES guide, but if you don't have a way for readers to buzz by this for info, it's just agitating and annoying. You want to maybe add a layout and just edit your guides, otherwise the info's really good but there's no way to find what you need. Testa on the other hand, has a ton of impressive FAQs all with great info, ASCII and a nice layout. Can't think of a way to have them improve, but keep up the good work.

9 - SOng - Hands down SOng. His guides alone can probably dominate anyone on this site, it's ridiculous the info he can put into his works, let alone how his fingers haven't fallen off from typing all of it. To back it up, his layout's nicely done and looks great. Doesn't use much filler if at all any and if you look into his guides, you'll find nothing but detailed info, even in the tiniest aspects of a game you never thought to think of. As for Mister Sinister, he's got some ok stuff himself, as the detail in his guides are also very nicely done. His layout's decent, I'd rate it 7/10, just felt some things could be edited here and there, but over all an ok writer. He loses due to only really writing for a few games and that it he just wrote a full FAQ then chopped it up and resubmitted parts for more easy KB in each game. I don't really care for writers that do that, but his info is at least good, for what he's written for. Keep up the great work though, SOng, I love it :)

41 - Apathetic Aardvar - Aardvar has a ton of guides, however a large majority are just Shining Force II map images. However, he has a broader range of work over JChristopher, where Chris focuses on Marvel vs. Capcom, which is fine, but over all, Aardvar takes my vote. Good info, nice simple layout, I can't really complain. Same goes for Chris, but Aardvar takes it.

1 - A I e x (tough one, but I give Alex the nod here)

33 - Nemesis (easy match-up, as Span has never fixed that monstrosity of a FF3 FAQ up to proper levels)

49 - Dallas (Got to take Dallas here, the guy is solid through and through)

Neither (Dingo still has errors all over his guides while Gray Fox has a severe case of the incomplete FAQs)

Abstain

40 - TestaALT (better format makes the day here as the total lack of one for his opposition makes his FAQs rather tough to read)

9 - SOng (although they seem similar, SOng puts together a solid file each time and gets the point across in an excellent manner, so he gets the edge here)

41 - Apathetic Aardvark (this one is by default as I can not condone useless file size inflation. Besides, Apathetic writes a cleaner file to boot, far easier on the eyes)

(Note: the first choice was the hardest of any for me. I really like the detail Alex includes in his FAQs, and his work on layouts. I really like Karpah's stuff, too, and I like how much she contributes to the community. So it's a tough vote, but I'm going with Alex for the sheer volume and polish. Seeing a FAQ listed on a game profile page from either of them makes me happy, though.)
