Rate my sales

A I e x | Posted 6/23/2007 3:01:07 AM | message detail
After considering it for a long time, I decided a few short weeks ago that the outrageously enormous game collection I prided myself on having for so many years, at some point (I don't know when) lost its appeal entirely and became much more a hassle than anything else.

So I sold it.

Not all of it, just everything I never play, and everything I never intended to play again (which as it turned out, was a lot).

For no other reason than because I already have the list typed out, this topic is now a...

If I ever were to dump my stuff, I know I would dump my whole Genesis set (never played it, only have it cause I got it for free), some crap NES games, some crap SNES games, and maybe Red Steel. The rest I wuld keep simply cause I can not see my interest in this stuff waning after 23 years of gaming (man the Coleco still lights up my life once every couple of weeks... Gorf kicks ass!).

You sold ALL of that? O_O

I have a fairly large gaming collection as well (not so much new stuff like yours was mainly composed of, but I have a LOT of GCN, SNES, N64, and GBA games). The thing that's keeping me from selling any of it is my pack rat nature. I have that tendency to think that someday I'll want to play these games again, and in some cases that's true (Last year I brought the N64 to my dorm and it gets used on a fairly regular basis, even after several years of being literally kept in storage. My roommate also brought his Sega Genesis in, and I bought the Sega CD, both of which got used rather often.). So yeah...

Case and point, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.

Yeah, that's the thing, I was always the same way. All four years of university I literally moved everything with me. I always had every console set up, every game on the shelf, I was the guy everyone knew as "the guy with everything" those room could be used for all your gaming needs.

It was just a thought I had one day about a month ago at work, where I asked myself whether I really had a good reason to hang onto all of it, and I couldn't think of one. I let myself dwell on it for almost two weeks before I made the decision.

Basically I'm at a really difficult crossroads where I simply don't have the energy to put into this new generation of incresingly enormous and complex games, putting a serious kink in the future on my dominant hobby for the past 20 years. Further, this is coupled with almost total disinterest in pursuing any career in either of my majoring fields (Computer Science or Psychology). These two seemingly unrelated issues have somehow coalesced into the need for a serious change, which at this moment is manifesting its first steps as an almsot Buddhist-like liquidating of all the excess crap that I own.

A buddy of mine and I are going to be taking a trip to New Zealand after we complete our fifth year and graduate (May '08), and I haven't yet hammered out all the details, but after the next step (of selling my PC and going back to a laptop) I won't have any reason to return here. At least not for a fairly long time.

Of course, now that you've navigated through my life story, or at least the 2007 version, I can answer the question.

About four grand.

You sold Xenosaga, Twilight Princess, The Minish Cap, SF64, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, MK64...I didn't look at EVERY game on the list, but you sold all of the good games. And holy crap, you must have six times more games than me if you still have games left after that. O.o

Wowsers, that's a lot of stuff. I'm kinda like Devin in the sense that I always feel like I will go back to a game and play it, even years down the line... I realised this after I sold my N64 twice, now on my third and slowly getting a nice set of games for it at last.

Also <3 my Amiga with hundreds of games.

Final Fantasy Tactics was listed under stuff I kept.

It's a pretty decent PC, I haven't yet decided whether I want to sell it as a whole, or in pieces. I don't play many PC games (aside from WoW still occasionally) so I won't be looking for a laptop anywhere near as powerful as the machine I have now is.

Specs on this machine are:

AMD Athalon 64 Processor
3000+
1.99 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
120 GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon X1800 XL PCI Express 256 MB Card (DVI, VGA & S-Video outs)

I used to play Oblivion running at 1680 x 1050 on almost maxed out settings, so like I said, it's a good machine. If you, or anyone else, is serious and wants to make an offer, feel free to drop me an email.

Not really, I've always preferred Tv series' to DVD movies of which I've never actually collected many. I basically own The Shawshank Redemption, Batman Begins and Star Trek; First Contact on DVD and that's about it. I'll hang onto those, but it's not like they're worth anything anwyay.

An excellent idea. New Zealand is on my list of must-visits and I've heard fantastic things both from former NZ residents and folks who just visited. I would advise you to start making a giant list of places to see and get a NZ map to start planning. There's always time for the side trips and stuff you won't find on Google, but it's good to have an itinerary as a guideline.

And man, the sale of so much great stuff is painful. I simply left most of my non-essential game stuff (read: older consoles and games) with my bros since I figure they can at least still get some play out of 'em. I hope you don't start thinking about all those awesome games 2 years from now and get seller's remorse. :)

re: SubSane

That's awesome, I definitely hear that.

As for the games, most of the ones I hung onto are the ones that have the most nostalgia value for me, but nevertheless, I hope your're right. I'm one of those people who suddenly gets an urge to play an old game. I pick it up and jump into it, then ten minutes later I'm bored and it goes back to the shelf for another year. I have too many games like that, and I'm not convinced it's reason enough to keep them. The ones I did keep I feel are the ones I'm most likely going to want to go through from start to finish again someday. That, or they just have some sentimental value (like Tactics Ogre).

You don't need to keep children.

Anyhow, I don't see how selling loads of games does any good, if it's all just for a holiday. A holiday lasts for a week or two, but games are with you forever.

Where did you sell it? I'm guessing that if you sold it all to a retailer, they got a pretty big shock when you walked in with a container full of games.

I sold them to be rid of them, not because I needed the money. My entire life I have been the poster child combination of just about every response in this topic, my games were like my children, they were like the bread and butter of everything I owned, so this is me doing what I want to do, for my own reasons.

I'm not trying to schedule a "holiday." I've been looking all around here, looking at all my potential options and discussing ideas with friends and collegues. I have a hard time with the idea of graduating (which I will this coming May) and moving right into the job market. It's almost as if I'll land somewhere, but all I see in 20 years is a picture of myself, exactly as I am now, except 20 years older. It's like I've learned everything I can staying here, and I'll never grow any further if I stick around, regardless of what career I pursue.

So in other words, I am trying to liquify as much as possible with the intention of leaving here, and I'm not talking "weeks," I'm talking years.

Also, everything went on eBay. I doubt there are any collectors out there as hardcore as I was that would sell to anyone who didn't fully appreciate the value of the great condition and rarity of so much of what I got rid of.

It's like I've learned everything I can staying here, and I'll never grow any further if I stick around, regardless of what career I pursue.

Entering the work force right after graduating can be good and bad. Sure you can try new things, meet new people, and experience new things by moving somewhere far from what you know, but unless you've been saving money like mad all through college it's going to be tough to get by. The fact is new experiences cost money.

I decided to start my career right after college and worked for a few more years until I had more experience and savings than I knew what to do with. When I left the last job and moved I had really good stuff on the resumé and more than enough saved to live somewhere new for 2 months without working. In that time I traveled all around and had lots of time to look for work, a place to live, and interviews. Now that I'm working again I've of course mellowed out with the spending, but that's only in preparation for the next big trip. :)

Student loans make it all the more fun, which is basically what's covering my final 2.5 years of college. >_< I do work on the weekends though, and save a good chunk of my money in the bank, so it's not like I'm pissing it away on crap. I may splurge here or there, but never too crazy. I just have to wait to see what's coming up once college is done, I'll have to get a job with my degree and find a real place to live (I live in a dorm and take classes year-round), to figure out where to go from there. Shouldn't be as hard as I'm led to believe though...

Nah, it ain't tough. I understand the older folks think it's a hard world out there and everyone's out to crap on you... and well, they are. But finding a place isn't so tough. :)

Some more sage advice: craigslist.com can be your best friend when it comes to finding furniture and a place to live. Or, preferably, a place that already has furniture. Studio apartments ftw!!!

A l e x - I sound in a somewhat similar situation as you right now. Just finished another year of uni, graduate in May and wondering where the hell I go from there. My plan is to finish with a few hundred pounds under my belt (from keeping some of that student loan back and working for the soulless capitalist regime that is Asda-Walmart), learn to drive and go travelling.

Sounds pretty vague but I although May in some respects is far away, it'll be here in a second, and I'll have to grow up and take hold about what I'm doing next. University is this amazing experience and although it's all about independence, at the same time at least I know what I'm doing here - get up, go to lectures, take exams - going from that to suddenly having to mature in a summer is going to be tough; I just hope I'm ready in time.

At least it seems like you are taking action now, getting money ready for at least the next few years.

I didn't have the money to take time off after uni. Though I did do something a bit wild anyway - packed up all my stuff and moved clear across the country. I had a thousand bucks saved up from working more-than-part-time all the way through uni, so once I got my graduation piece of paper, I made plans to leave town.

I finally quit my part time job late last month, flew out three days later, spent a month finding my feet on this side of the country, and then went out looking for a new job, which I found fairly easily. Much more easily than I would have, in Melbourne, anyhow.

Sweet! Whereabouts are you now?

People too often think getting it away from it all means taking time off to live a leisurely lifestyle, when in fact simply moving (and working in) someplace new can be rejuvenating and feel just as great.
