Oh, btw, I am definitely against making the wrapper into a frame that sits at the top of your browser window. I hate frames. --- This statement is False. |

I dislike frames as well. And, to clarify my above mention to trace's
question, what will happen if the user directly links to a file? As of
now it doesn't seem to be blocking it at all if the user links to a
random file: E.G. http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/urban_assault.txt How about redirecting such links to a page that had the standard "Files cannot be linked to and click here to let us know" or whatever page along with a link to the proper FAQ. It would do a lot for users unfamiliar to GameFAQs if, instead of just getting an unfriendly "uh-oh intarwebs be broked" message they get a "Here you go! There's a problem but we have you covered." message. --- The killer, karmic©, charismatic, cryptastic©, clever Kirby! FAQs: 24 (2003KB) | CRP: 43180 | Images: 6 |

BTW, on a related note, either my guide has never been rated or I can't
view the rating for some reason or other (I have tried rating the guide
and still nothing--is there a minimum value of votes needed?). Anyway,
can you make it easier to view the rating? --- This statement is False. |

kirbyroks, that's a poor example of what you're trying to demonstrate.
You haven't linked to the file; you've provided the URL, which we
copy/paste into our browser. A true demonstration is if you actually
host a web page that has a direct hyperlink to the file (and instant
messaging doesn't count either). --- The wind will take me home... http://scottie-thenerd.deviantart.com |

Now that this thing has actually gone live, I completely forgot why it
was implemented in the first place. Does this mean I can link my table
of contents to the appropriate sections and whatnot, and maybe link
images within the FAQ so I don't have to fumble through ASCII maps? --- I like taking people from behind, but this is the first time I've been taken. - Sh!zuru |

CJayC, thanks for the update. Can you talk about the entity
substitutions within the PRE tags? A quick spot-check of the source
shows angle-brackets, quotation marks, and ampersands are being
converted. (Very glad for the View/Download link.) But a text file
containing a few residual 8-bit characters (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/197341/18433) doesn't sub ’ for (’) or … for (…). Are the validators choking on the oddities within PRE? Also a long title can result in some strange wrapping, as with my http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/471237/44944, with window width set to fit a printed page. --- Guides & other contributions: http://www.esque.com/slr/gamefaqs/ Light on graphics, no ads. |

Scottie, I wasn't providing an example of a link, I was providing an
example of a file. I created a webpage and used that to link to files
and was able to do that without it being blocked... If you're curious about it, just create a basic webpage and upload it or put it on some odd wiki somewhere and then remove it when you're done. --- The killer, karmic©, charismatic, cryptastic©, clever Kirby! Anyone else turn "Allow HTML Headers" off? Notice it's being ignored
today for some reason? I've already reported the problem via Feedback,
after verifying my Contrib Info was still set to "No". So, just a
heads-up. With the setting being ignored, I just ran into an annoying situation. My connection's about to go down, so I figure I'll replay an old game in the downtime. But I look and realize I've downloaded none of its guides. Hit the game's FAQs page, dozens of files, can't remember a thing about the game so not sure which might be useful. I tell ya, downloading them all was a major PITA with the wrapper in place and needing to click View/Download each time to get the unadulterated guide. I gotta feel for regular non-contributing members (our readers) who can't get around the wrappers. --- Guides & other contributions: http://www.esque.com/slr/gamefaqs/ Light on graphics, no ads. |

If you set the thing to "Off" doesn't it still have to be approved like
any contribution change? And since it's the weekend that stuff doesn't
get taken care of very quickly. I do agree that there should probably
be an option to view it for the viewers, and I'm sure CjayC is probably
implamenting it. --- (>ò_ó)>---{[=(>x_x)> |

| Sorry to ask, but just to clarify - are you saying that any person that's contributed to this site, has the option to turn wrapping view on/off for all content on this site, not just their own contributions? If that's the case, I might resubmit a couple of guides I wrote that were up a couple of years ago (I requested their removal back when GFAQs merged with Gamespot). |

| Zach, the setting had been turned off (submitted
and implemented) last week and was working fine (no wrappers) up until
yesterday. Looking at the setting yesterday, it was still set to "Off".
Bug. Jeren: Go to Contribute > Update Contributor Information and set "Allow HTML Headers" to "No". That only turns off the wrapper around the guides and only when you view them. Or CJayC has changed the implementation. There was talk about contribs having a blanket as well as an individual setting that would pertain to their guides alone. I know I'd suggested having a member setting (contribs and noncontribs alike) to allow or block the wrappers. --- Guides & other contributions: http://www.esque.com/slr/gamefaqs/ Light on graphics, no ads. |

The past behavior I was seeing was the bug, as it's been explained to
me. The Contrib Info setting only blocks wrappers for your own guides.
Set it and no one will see the wrappers when your guides are displayed. --- Guides & other contributions: http://www.esque.com/slr/gamefaqs/ Light on graphics, no ads. |

| This is an excellent addition to the site -- by far my favorite effect of this is that Firefox (at least) is now able to auto-detect the encoding on FAQs that use Japanese characters, thus obviating the need for manually changing the encoding every time you open the FAQ. |
