FAQ Wrapping: Live!

CJayC | Posted 3/6/2007 12:47:42 AM | message detail
The FAQ Wrappers are now live.

Please report any bugs or errors you find to the usual place (http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/feedback/new.html?typeid=20), but initial tests show everything should be working fine. The opt-out has been in place since this morning, but I'm really hoping few, if any, of you will see the need to use it, given the almost completely positive/neutral feedback on it.

Your FAQ hits will be wonky for a day or two, but then should catch up quite nicely, and be updated at midnight for the previous day instead of two days prior.

Any general questions/concerns/suggestions please leave below, but feedback will be much faster for issues and problems.

Is there still a way to stop people from linking directly to the .txt files?

Still in place, no worries. The .txt files still exist right where they were before (as you see from the view/download link), so that hasn't changed at all.

Is the page thing going to be implemented, or have I just not found it, and it exists already?

It's live and functional if you change the URL, but nothing points to it yet.

Co-authors only come up with one author on the wrapper, by the way.

Will fix.

Image files that have their image type denoted at the end of the file name have the image type shown in the "Return to _Insert Game_ FAQs"

ie. http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/587298/44564

Where it says "Return to Genghis Khan (PNG) FAQs"

Actually, on the topic of image files, would it be possible to get rid of the footer in images? Most images aren't normally larger than the computer screen they're displayed on, and so it generally looks tacky having both a bottom and top wrapper displayed at the same time.

Don't know how much of a deal this is, but tried browsing on my Wii and the wrappers don't stretch all the way across the screen (just stop at 79 characters). However longer titles force it across; for example WarioWare Smooth Moves shifts it along a little, and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines allows it to stretch all the way along the screen.

That's a glitch. I'm betting I'm re-using a variable name somewhere there. :)

After seeing it live, you're right; it doesn't look too spiffy.

Odd, it does the same thing in PC Opera too. I'll hand that off to a local expert, as CSS makes my brain hurt.

One other thing; with multiplatform games that have FAQs listed by which version they are written for (in my given example, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess), would it be possible to get an FAQ to redirect to the page of the version it was written for?

For example, my FAQ here, written for the Wii, listed on the GameCube page;

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/file/920769/45837

would then be redirected to here;

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/game/928519.html

Or is this unplausible to code in?

would it be possible to get an FAQ to redirect to the page of the version it was written for?

Actually, the FAQ will redirect back to the page it was linked _from_. Note that both:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/file/920769/45837
and
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/file/928519/45837

Are two views of the exact same file, just with different headers based on where the user linked from. This will no doubt cause for first-time submitters who will think they have to update each copy of their guide, but will otherwise be fine and easier to understand for the average user.

Tis a good job as always Ceej ^.^

Just a couple things though that kinda makes me curious.
Please look at the FAQ below

http://www.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/file/930982/44268

Is there a way for you to make the width ratio larger so the name where it says "Return To" isn't wrapped so tightly? Thus stretching the Header and Footer and making it harder to read?

Also... I'll get back to you on that, I must go now.

Looks cool on my FAQs.

The best thing is the direct link possibility.

A rate-this-faq will be interesting, if we allow registered users to rate the FAQs, contributors will see how they can be improved. One thing should be clear: only the owner of the FAQ will be able to see the ratings. </idea>

I can't seem to view any files which are larger than 800KB. I get the following error in Firefox:

Trying to view same page in IE, I am greeted with blank white page. What can I do to fix this?

I'm still a bit iffy with the header and footer, but it's not as distracting, so I'll probably get used to it.

Is it possible to stick a Print feature in as well so people can Print directly from the file?

I'm gonna be completely honest. All around this is a good idea, and when I went through some of my written FAQs, the headers/footers look pretty pro. On my maps however, they don't look as good.

Looks very nice. Two quick questions:

a.) Is the you have to link to the FAQ page, not to the actual FAQ rule still in effect?
b.) We had discussed basic HTML, etc. going along with this. So just out of curiosity, is the header/footer the only addition here (I'm not complaining; I'm just wondering)?

Looks AWESOME. I love it.

One small question though. Why the "View/download original file" link? It seems superfluous, and the wrap would look fine if that line just had a date for most recent update on it.

will timski now be able to browse the FAQs again with his robots and update the 'FAQ' Writer Rankings?

Some of my submitted images are much larger than one screen, so the wrapper is only on the first screen.
example?
http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/nes/file/563426/42758
try scrolling to the right. The wrapper disappears to the left. My Ideas to solve this are either a flexible wrapper, that moves along with the scrolling and still stays on top only. Or an extra screen in contributor central where you can set for which of your contributed files you want the wrapper to be displayed and for which you don't want to see it.
Before the wrapper was implemented these huge canvas images were shrunk in firefox and displayed in one screen. Then you could click on a specific part and then this part would be displayed in normal size. Maybe a zooming option or allowing firefox to scale the image again would be nice.

Are there rating/feedback options in the planning. I wouldn't mind one more line in the header for some stars that rate the file */10 or */5 or e/pi in the left and a dropdown menu on the right that let's the reader get in touch with the author maybe. As mentioned before, these should only be visible for the contributor.

Other than that, it works pretty well, and look nice. Thanks for that cjay.

I asked a question, however that was in the Beta Q&A, so I've deleted that post and moved it here instead as it seems more appropriate. So, uh, anyway, here is my question :)

As best I understand it, the author has the ability to allow or disallow wrapping on their FAQs.

Is it possible, or will it be possible at some point in the near future for GameFAQs readers (presumably, those with accounts here) to allow/disallow wrapping from their end? Naturally, if the author has disallowed wrapping on their work, then users should not be able to override, but if the author has no objections to having/not-having their work wrapped, would it be possible to put an option in a user's account (in the Modify your Site Settings section, presumably)?

The two banners on the above guide look quite strange on the same page. Also, do the FAQ hits just show hits from this site, or from other sites that are directly linking to the FAQ as well?

And I remember back in the original topic about this, you mentioned something about adding HTML abilities to FAQs. Is this going to be happening any time soon to correlate with the wrapping, or was that just another idea being thrown around?

A couple of questions:

When it is requested that the previous update date not be posted, will the header/footer give that information anyway?

Also: Since this converts from txt to htm, this isn't a stepping stone towards more borders and such is it? (i.e. ads at the top, menu at the side, all that stuff).
---
This statement is False.
kirbyroks | Posted 3/7/2007 3:09:53 AM | message detail
I'm with trace's comments here.

What's the word on basic HTML for the table of contents, out of curiosity, and now that the header is there with the GameFAQs/Authors thing in it, what's the word on linking to that page?

Also, If you have an image that turns out to be wider than the page (assume the user is running and 800x600 res and the image happens to be bigger) then the top bar looks weird when they scroll off to the size as it sizes itself based on the width of the browser window.

That problem with image size shouldn't matter if images are to be exempt from FAQ wrapping. Although, one could make a variable dependent on the resolution of the image and make it work, though that may require a lot of debugging... especially for zoomed images or small ones.

Anyway, I have noticed a lot of older FAQs don't conform to the size limitations. I went to one that used to be such a case, but now it is fixed, yet the update is still old. Is FAQ wrapping cutting these off? (the FAQ I mentioned is here:http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/197099/11800)

This statement is False.
