Hey, it's Devin Morgan ! Hi!
Well, back on topic, I think I had already talked about that before, but it will be even worse on the place of codes, people may start providing lots of fakes ones in order to get rid of the ads...
---
Searching for a girl with black hair (by her shoulders), glasses, less than 1,65 meters tall, really white... Can you please help me with it?

soluzar - Actually I found that out by reading a couple of your posts on the FAQ Contrib board. ;)
But you're right, I guess I did generalize a bit much there. Anytime Jeff posts a topic on the FAQ Contributors board, I almost guarantee that you'll see all sorts of people popping out of the woodwork, many of whom aren't even FAQ writers up to that point, just for the sake of posting. My argument was more geared towards those who come into a CJayC topic with the "durrr I posted in Ceej's topic, I'm so cool" attitude. That **** needs to stop, and as such my attitude is if you have no business at the FAQ board, don't post! Chances are that whatever Jeff is posting about there doesn't even apply to you, so posting is worthless (and to an extent annoying). There hasn't been a single Jeff topic on that board which hasn't been visited by people who literally have no business there. I find that lame.
Regardless, I still found it quite interesting how all the people who were _not_ prolific (ironic since the topic was directed towards the prolific folks anyway), were the ones complaining that they don't have the ad-free site as well. What's up with that?

The ads don't bother me much, what bothers me is that GameFAQs is going
corporate. All the ads are CNet ads. Sites that used to be good, like
TVTome and Gamefaqs, are horribly tainted by the corporate life of CNet.
This wouldn't be so bad if CNet had any idea how to make a good looking webpage, or was a little more hands off instead of this in-your-face ****. I don't like their business practices, and I don't want to be apart of GameFAQs because of them. They don't care about their customers.

Yes, that element of your post does indeed ring true. I just felt a bit self-conscious, since I often hang around the FCB and CC, despite not yet having a single FAQ to my name. I'll be a lot happier when I have at least one that I can point to.

I couldn't agree with you more. Although it could be my imagination, it seems to me that there was a time that CJayC used to post on the boards a lot more than he does now. It's my opinion that an important reason why he stopped posting so much is because of the lame "OMG!!! Ceeeeeeejus!!!!111!!" junk that goes on every time he shows his head outside of TDG and MBA.

Well, if there's a new site planned by GF users, in my opinion, it
would have to also support PS2, XBOX and GameCube in addition to PS3,
360, Rev and so forth. Most people have those systems.
I'm silent in this community, but I'm not usually silent in the places I'm in. I've decided to step up and speak, because I agree with the cause. This place is going too commercial to my tastes.
I was on the staff for a few PC games, people who've played them have seen my name in the credits. They're niche titles from an independent developer, but it's there. I've also created a few FAQs for hockey games, and did a couple reviews. So I've given stuff to GameFAQs. My FAQs, my reviews, and my work on those games that this site hits, no matter how much they may or may not get.
I'd like a site with the most simple design, light on graphic to cut on bandwidth usage, and focused on FAQS, Reviews and a Community of mature gamers with a creative drive to write.
About asking people to host their FAQs...I'm ready to work on that once/if a site would be up and running. I can mail (Not spam) people to get FAQs from good games to jump. I don't know anyone, but I can try to make my point.
So, who's a worker? Who's got SOME money, because you can't do this on Geocities you know. Let's see, and let's continue the discussion.

How can you tell if someone has the will to contribute something
soon? For example, can you tell, just by looking at my profile, that my
first guide is in progress? Can you tell that the walkthrough is beyond
the 40% complete mark?
That's great! But...
I cannot count the number of times in my life I've started projects--some even getting to the 80 or 90 percent completion stage--and then they weren't finished. Starting a FAQ is one thing. Actually having complete FAQs posted on the site is something entirely different.

Phil, first we'll need some sort of private forum where we can get people to join to start discussing and see who has what resources. But yes, I agree with everything you said and I'd gladly take part in this situation.
Also, why aren't you a VIP? It'd be so cool to have that as your status.

phil, all your plans sound good, from the simple design to the cut dow
in graphics, if you start a forum I'll be there, and I will be happy to
pay 1$ symbolic, and if 30 other people do so we'll have some 150-250mb
webspace and a domina for at least a year to start from, yeah, count me
in!
so what about a name? Gamefaqs2 sounds crappy, therealgamefaqs too, well, what about age, as for 'all games ever', or something like this...

Nah, seriously, you have a point. However, it does give me a valid reason to be around the FCB. I'm confident my guide will be completed one day, though. It's just too important to me to leave unfinished, no matter how long it takes.

Maybe the site should have just died?
Look at 4chan. They've resisted every effort to have someone buy them out; the admin swear they'll shut it down before they sell out.
Speaking of which, 4chan has shut down five times now. With an operating expense comparable to GameFAQs (moreso because of the intensive image hosting) the admins are shelling out thousands of dollars each year to avoid certain death.
At some point in time, you just have to realize you've lost and shut down.
Or it turns into this.

^Look at YTMND, I don't know much about 4Chan, but donations work
wonders. Also, you can get advertisements yourself, not be bought out
by someone, but have people advertise on your website. Advertising is
essential to keeping yourself alive in the world - selling out isn't.

Hi... I noticed in one of your posts, "The Hye Circus" (I'm assuming
that must be someone's alt or something?), you mentioned "gathering all
the FAQs"? I do hope you're not planning to just take them all off this
site without the authors' consent.
For the record, you do NOT have my consent, will NEVER have my consent, and will get sued if you include mine in that.

Or it turns into this.
I'd much rather have this GameFAQs than no GameFAQs, if that's the only options available (and that was pretty much the case).
Otherwise I'd be back to hosting my material on a selfmade Fortunecity or Geocities site again where I'd get a glorious 4 hits a day, 3 of which were likely scared away by endless popup ads long before they got to read any of my guides.

All I care, as a FAQer, is being able to host my guides in a visible
place, to help the most gamers I can. And that's what gamefaqs does for
everyone here.
We have this central place visited for millions of people when they are in trouble in games. The site does provide good organization, design, and yes, some ads. I can't really understand why all the madness about the ads. What's wrong with earning profits when they are doing a great service?
I will always post my FAQs here, no matter what happens, because I know people will get to read them here. And they have always respected me, and have respected their readers by not accepting bad-quality guides, even if they were written by me, as it has happened sometimes :P
GameFAQs has some employees working on it everyday, that's just great. Much better than people contributing with their free time, when you don't an obligation with something. It's something that must really require a lot of effort, and I really hope you GameFAQs2 people to be successful, and maybe I host my guides there too if it gets good enough, but I don't see why all the whining about something that just works good enough.
Well, that's all I had to say, thanks for reading.

Paraphrased:
Change is one thing.
[List of changes] is another.
That doesn't make a whole lot of sense; but, I think I know what you are trying to say. There is change and there is CHANGE. Well, in life, there is change and there is CHANGE and there is CHANGE!!!!!.
For example:
change - girlfriend/boyfriend
CHANGE - spouse
CHANGE!!!!! - kids
In the grand scheme of things, a few ads, a changed logo and merged message boards are the least of the daily changes I deal with, so I don't worry about it. If, in your life, this sort of thing is the biggest, most drastic CHANGE you deal with, then I envy you.

change - girlfriend/boyfriend
CHANGE - spouse
CHANGE!!!!! - kids
In the grand scheme of things, a few ads, a changed logo and merged message boards are the least of the daily changes I deal with, so I don't worry about it. If, in your life, this sort of thing is the biggest, most drastic CHANGE you deal with, then I envy you.

OK. I just sat down and read this entire topic.
And I can't stop laughing, really, I can't.
Sites change. People change. Businesses change. Look at the site as it was five years ago, for those of you who were around then. Did you really expect it to stay the same, as the userbase swelled, the cost of running such a site swelled, the sheer volume of work that needed to be done to maintain such a business grew exponentially?
Yeah, not all of the changes that are happening are cool. But CJayC is (was) the business owner. He can do what he sees fit. To the person whinging because users werent told about the user surveys that went around - are you freaking insane? If CNet wanted to, they could close down the entire site tomorrow. They do not have to consult you, or users in general, in any way shape or form. We're not even customers, because we dont pay for the services the site offers.
Either put up and shut up, which isnt bad seeing as there's nothing major to 'put up with', or go away. By all means, have the intention of creating a gameFAQs clone, but I believe you'll very soon find that to create a site of this scale, out of your own pocket (because you won't get donations unless you're doing something other than copying a bunch of FAQs people can already access here) is rather implausible and unfeasible. But have fun trying ok?

Yeah, these boards are dying from the changes. There are SO many less people coming on regularly.
