For those who have applied for college before...
From: nintendomaster14 | Posted: 4/3/2006 9:00:11 PM | Message Detail
Did you apply early anywhere? If so, did you get in? I am trying to get a rough estimate of how many people actually were accepted to their first choice college.

I applied to one college. I got in. The rest is history.

Of course, it's more complicated than that. The Moriartys have a "legacy" at my university (meaning at least one of us [my mother, in this case] is a graduate), and she also works for the university, so instead of paying $40,000 a year, I go for free (as do all children of employees tenured more than five years).

So I go to a teir one university and only pay room and board, although I could have gotten into better schools with my high school GPA and SAT score. My family is middle class though so we could only afford a good school if I decided to go here, and I'm glad I did. It was either this, or a SUNY school. I chose NU.

Good luck with your applications. -Colin

Ditto. I was already accepted in December 2003, and I started college in September 2004.

I applied to 4 when I was ready to go to university. I was accepted at them all, so I chose the school I'm currently attending.

Good luck with applications - get some letters from your profs to go with them.

Applying early is good if you're quite sure you want to go there, or would like an increased chance of getting in.

I got into the three schools I applied to: Northeastern (where I believe Mr. Moriaty goes), Roger Williams, and Penn State (U.Park). Right now I think I should have applied to more but the school I'm going to attend next year seems like a great fit.

I applied to a mismatch of five based both on location and whether I wanted to go there, comptuer science for each. I got accepted to four of them, and neither accepted nor rejected from the last, I just remember getting a letter from them one day that said "Hey, if you want to major in geography then you can come here." I hadn't taken geography since like, grade 9. I forget what the point of this story is.

Although the application process is bound to be different here, one thing I think that is in common is to apply as early as possible, that way you beat the rush and they can look at your application with more time.

I applied to Rhode Island College and University of Rhode Island. URI gave me a centennial scholarship, and RIC gave me something smaller.

Also, she went here. I admit that was the real dealbreaker at the time, but it's worked out remarkably well all things considered. This college is awesome, and the theatre department is excellent.

I applied to two colleges, and were accepted at both. The funny thing was that the one college offered a $13000 per year scholarship, but the tuition was $25K. I ended up going to Penn State since they offered a $5K scholarship, but only $9K tuition.

I'm in the final week of my third year. After all this time, trying to remember the technobabble names of all the classes I've taken is next to impossible. The most recent ones that spring to mind are Database Systems, Operating Systems, Compilers, Systems Analysis & Design, and Networking. This semester I'm in Algorithm Concepts and Software Engineering. Some of them are all right. Most of them are boring as ass.

So boring in fact, that I can't really see myself sitting through another five or six of them next year, and I've got an appointment this week to speak with an academic programmer about switching my major and minor (computer science with psychology.) That way it will give me a chance to pursue and study something I actually find interesting, and then I can perhaps cotninue in the computing field through a more practical two year college program after I graduate next year.

Oh wow. I'm at the end of my second year at NJIT under the CS major, and I'm still in intermediate Java. Over the summer I'll be doing Computer Organization and Architecture, then in the upcoming fall I will endure such topics as Programming Language Concepts and Principles of Operating Systems. I entered the school in 2004 as a computer engineer, and switched major to CS in spring 2005, so I'm slightly behind at the moment. No big deal though, that's why I'm catching up over the summer (I won't be doing anything else so why not :P).

I applied to four, but I really only had one in mind. I was confident that I'd get in. Maybe that was foolish thinking, but I did anyway.

If you're unsure of what you want, or if you're not sure if you'll get into your first choice college, you definitely should apply to more than one place.

All you CS people. I highly approve.

I know the system is definitely different over here... Here, everyone just submits a list of courses they want to do, to the central governing body, then you sit back and wait for offers. I got a first round offer to Melbourne University, my first preference. Whee.

Down here university entry is determined by your UAI, or rank, after you complete your final year of high school. The UAI is, as I said, a ranking ranging from about 30-100, with 100 being the highest (or best performing) in the state. I managed to get a UAI or 91, placing me in the top 9% of my state, not bad considering I had to teach myself three subjects, and went to a school where an overwhelming majority didn't care (the overall rank of your school affects your UAI).

I have already graduated from university once with a Bachelor of Business but now I'm back again doing Structural Engineering and possibly geology.

Holy crap on a stick. I love it. A hell of a lot more than most games I've played. One sub-bonus is that the main story is actually relatively short, so people with a huge amount of free time really won't have that much trouble beating the game, but there will still be tons and tons of stuff to do at their leisure after it's over. I just beat the game this morning and it was fantasterrific. Still not even close to done of course.

I applied to one college... I didn't want to study anywhere else and I was fairly certain I'd get in (guess it's a different system) due to my ICFES score (ICFES = SAT, more or less)... the problem was the CASH, since this is the single most expensive college around here. My dad told me he'd make an effort --he really wanted me to study there-- but lo and behold, I got a scholarship! I'm majoring in Computer Science, too! w00t. The thing is, I'm thinking about switching. Not too happy with CS :(

I'm quite lucky, I can choose to go to any one of the fourteen Scottish universities and multiple colleges for free due to my being a Scottish resident.

There are no costs for Irish, Welsh and Scottish students at any Scottish university.

In terms of considering a university, there are four I am considering - University of Glasgow, Glasgow Calendonian University, Bell University (all Glasgow) and Edinburgh University (three guesses).

Really? Last I checked everyone around the world who is able to comes to the United States to go to school because we have a better university system than any other country in the world. Not to mention our medical establishment, economy, military and privatized sectors, but that goes without saying.

The US has trumped everyone in everything since 1945. Get used to it, it's not going to change. =)
