Well, I am back *doesn't know if anyone missed him*
From: GBFreak | Posted: 3/2/2006 8:41:29 PM | Message Detail
I don't really care that much on whether people missed me or not, I really felt like I had to restart my FAQing career with a story of what happened. Here is how it goes:

In December 2004 I was supposed to revise for my mock exams. But I couldn't be bothered since I never really wanted to study, I was lazy and kind of angry at my parents for taking away the internet. All I had was my computer and a GBA and a few games. So I decided to go back to playing Golden Sun and some other GBA games. That’s when my FAQing career was at its height. I was producing about 100+kb per week in January 2005, and I even produced my Golden Sun Game Script in 2 days (over 200kb). I pretended to study but all I did was mass make FAQs. It was sort of fun, but I should have really been revising.

Near the end of January 2005 came my mock exams, I did them but to tell the truth they were very very very bad. I had gotten the following results:
Maths – A* [100%]
Biology – A [72%]
Chemistry – A [73%]
Physics – A* [83%]
English Language – D [45%]
English Literature – E [32%]
French – F [15%]
Latin – U [4%]
Geography – B [64%]
And another U grade in a subject which I can’t remember now. The marks are estimates btw.

Then my school told me that I should go looking for another school, since my grades were pretty low and was highly unlikely that I would get into the school even if I did a bit better in the read GCSE exams. The grades I had to get were 6 A grades, of which Maths and English Language had to be A. Now you can see my problem, I got a D for English Language. Anyway, I never really cared, I didn’t know what I was capable off so I didn’t think I would make it.

I continued FAQing, but much less than before. I also went out a lot and took drugs and took up smoking like all my mates who did as bad as I did. Then when it came to April I got scared. I didn’t want to screw up, I didn’t want to not get into the 6th form because that’s the only way I know of getting into university and getting a good degree. I kept on crying at night, and all day, I missed school for a whole week and stayed locked up in my room feeling depressed, I don’t know if it was withdrawal from the drugs and smoking (since I quit due to my parents finding out) or whether I really was scared of failing my GCSE’s.

Then one day I just woke up and I decided that this was my entire entire fault. If I hadn’t ****** about when I was in school I wouldn’t be in this position. So I had to do something about it rather than feeling depressed and crying. So I went to my parents and asked them to get me a tuition teacher for English Language, and they did. They teacher charged £100 per week for a 2 hour session on Sundays, but she was the best I knew off. I remember asking her to give me 20 essays a week, and I spent about 15-20 hours a week studying English. It was painful, but I just kept on going. My fear kept me going.

8 Weeks later, in May 2005 my GCSE exams started. And I had not revised anything apart from English. So I spent day and night before throughout the exam period studying for my exams. I remember days when I would sleep at midnight and wake up at 2AM to study again. I remember taking 3-5 energy drinks before each exam. Then the period of exams finally came to a halt 8 weeks later. I had finished my exams, I had 2 months off. Now all I had to do was relax until the results came through. So I decided to go see a few of my mates from before, and I didn’t enjoy it anymore. So I thought of coming back to FAQing, but I didn’t want to do anymore work at all.

So I went over to the anime side. I first bought a few DragonBall Z movies off ebay, since I was a newbie to anime and all the anime I knew was Dragonball Z and pokemon. Then after that I bought the whole DB/DBZ/DBGT series off ebay, on data dvds. I watched that all constantly, and I was at the end of that half way through my holidays. Now I had 4 weeks to go, and no more dragonball z to watch. So I bought Bleach off ebay and Naruto. But I didn’t watch them at all. Then my grades came through one week before 6th form would start.

And they were: 6A*’s [>90%] and 4 A’s [>75%]. And I was shocked. Was I really capable of that, was I really that good all that time. Then I was so happy, I told everyone. Then came the day when I went back to school, and I stood proud I was now in 6th Form! I succeeded, I got great grades.

Now on the second day of 6th form I decided to check out Bleach, I started the first episode and I was hooked. It was awesome, I remember waking up early in the morning just to watch some Bleach. Then I soon finished it up to episode 55 in a week, then I downloaded a few more, I don’t remember how many more. Then I started Naruto and was soon at episode 130 on it too. I downloaded the rest of it up to the current episodes since I was not yet finished airing on TV.

Ever since then, I having been watching lots of anime, nearly all my free time (which I have a LOT of) is used watching anime. And according to my anime list on anidb I have seen: “2045 episodes” which is roughly over 28 days of continuous watching day and night. It’s a lot to see in such a short period of time. And now I know a lot about anime. Now I have seen all the greatest animes, and I have grown tired of the less greater anime. Great animes have become a norm to me, so I decided to take a break from anime.

So I bought a PSP, and the first games I got were MGSA and GTA:LCS. I finished GTA:LCS within a week up to 70%, then I started MGSA which I finished within another week but only the missions. So I thought why not go back to FAQing for a while? So I have decided to get back into FAQing. Starting with a MGSA FAQ, and then moving on slowly to other games, mostly PSP games.

So sorry about the big long post, but I felt like I should speak out loud! Anyway, I hope I can contribute to the FAQing community as much as I can. And thanks for reading this…

Thanks,

- Sintaku

I read it all. But you said you lost your internet. When did you get it back? And, welcome back, even though I'm new to the FAQing scene.

What about the 100kb per week?

Well, anyway. You look like a very intense person, when you want something you really dive in it with all your strength and soul. That's kind of good and kind of dangerous.

Nice to have you back.

I got the internet back soon after my exams were finished. And I got a 10MBPS connection, which owns.

I never thought of it that way. I guess I am intense.

Thanks for the welcoming.

Welcome back man. And congratulations with the grades, you deserve them. Not many people will try and recover as hard as you did, so enjoy sixth form (some of the best years of my life) and then university.

Do you live up north? In New Jersey the grading scale is like that, which made things a lot harder. In Florida they use a 10 point scale (90-100 A, 80-90 B, etc.) But yeah, New Jersey schools PWNED Florida schools in every way except that.

Well thanks for the welcoming. And sorry for the big post, I got carried away in the moment. It always happens when I have an idea, I just keep on going until I am exhausted or finished.

And yea, I feel that I shouldn't be wasting time doing nothing. I have to be doing something, either studying, watching tv/anime or FAQing or going out with a few mates.

I live in NC so if that's considered up north...
I used to live in Missouri which had the 90-100 scale. I've been getting more B's since I came to NC, because I keep having 91's.

Back when I was in school (circa 2001) they graded us like this:

A = 90-100%
B = 80-89%
C = 70-79%
D = 50-69%
U = < 50%

They didn't give out Fs because they carried a "negative stygma of failure" so we got U instead, which stands for "Unacceptable." Go Canada :P

In the US, some state school systems use the 7 pt scale (A=100-93) and some use the 10 pt scale (A=100-90/91). The main reasoning being that at the elementary through high school level, the students are expected to gain a basic knowledge of several different subjects, whereas at the college/university level, the subject material is considered more specialized, and the grading tougher, so a bigger scale is needed.

The states that use the 10 pt scale probably are matching the colleges in their area and/or using it to prepare their students for college.

And, if you want to get even more confused, some colleges use the 7 pt scale for developmental/general education courses, and the 10 pt scale for the more focused/major courses.

So, remember to ask the instructor, or read the syllabus!

However, the topic creator doesn't seem to be describing this situation, but rather the education system in another country (European-based, perhaps?).

Well, anyway, glad you're back.
