Eighth Prolific FAQers Tourney - Semi-Finals
From: Devin Morgan
| Posted: 7/16/2005 9:57:16 PM | Message Detail
Alright, we now have 4 authors remaining in this tourney, and only a
couple days left of it too. So far the matches have been great, quite
possibly the best bracket to date (just happened to be the way the
ranks fell this time, heh). Anyway, the bracket and CRP links can be
found here:
http://web.njit.edu/~dbm7/pbracket8.htm
Good luck to those who are left here in these semi-final matches which are both tough enough to be considered final matches in their own right. This only means the true final match will be something, indeed... :)

Damn, there goes my run.
Abstain, AstroBlue.
PS - If this goes the way I expect, you should have a 3rd place match. ;) ;)

Detailed reasons up da booya. If you want it quick, then: Psycho Penguin and DMorgan.
~ BSulpher vs. Psycho Penguin ~
Content: Worth 5 points. They're both quite great, and it's kinda unfair to distribute between them here, but I think Psycho Penguin slightly edges out here. They're both incredibly detailed authors, so it's very close here.
Steve: 3
Brian: 2
Format: Worth 4 points. This is another close one, but I think Brian needs to try different formats in different guides. His format is decent and gets the job done, but it's not THAT flashy. Steve isn't without his faults either, as some of his earlier guides (i.e. FF5, FF6, CT) are weak in formatting. However, his newer works make up for that.
Steve: 2.5
Brian: 1.5
Personality/Humor: Worth 3 points. Brian is a bit more straight to the point while Steve is more of a humorous type. While some could find it quite annoying, I think Steve very slightly edges out here due to the humor, although Brian displays good personality when he writes, so it's very close here.
Steve: 2
Brian: 1
Completeness: Worth 2 points. Brian wins out here, since Steve still has some incomplete guides across his CRP, while Brian has less, although you have to give Steve some credit for being able to manage all the large lists he does. Still, Brian wins this one.
Brian: 1.5
Steve: 0.5
Game Selection: Worth 1 point. Once again, Brian takes this one, since you have to give the man credit for delving into so many old school games. I like Steve's RPG game selections a lot, but Brian really takes this one.
Brian: 1
Steve: 0
Incredibly close match, but it all weighs down to:
Steve: 3 + 2.5 + 2 + 0.5 + 0 = 7.5
Brian: 2 + 1.5 + 1 + 1.5 + 1 = 7.0
However close it is and however good both writers are (both in my top ten), the winner here is Psycho Penguin aka Steve.
~ Astro Blue vs. Devin Morgan ~
Content: Worth 5 points. They're both great in this, but I don't find AstroBlue to be THAT great, putting aside his Final Fantasy Tactics/Advance guide, both of which are great, but Devin slightly edges out here since that's what his guides focus on. Where to go, what to do, and clear, concise writing.
Devin: 3
Astro: 2
Format: Worth 4 points. AstroBlue wins here because Devin reuses the same format with every single guide. It's not a bad format, but geez, it gets a bit old after awhile. Plus, I like AstroBlue's formats a tad bit more anyways.
Astro: 2.5
Devin: 1.5
Humor/Personality: Worth 3 points. For so many FAQs that he has, you can find Devin's guides to be a bit dry after awhile. I don't claim AstroBlue to be a large comedian either, but he edges out here slightly.
Astro: 2
Devin: 1
Completeness: Worth 2 points. I think Devin is a bit more comprehensive here. I'd rather not give excess details about this, but Devin wins out in this area.
Devin: 1.5
Astro: 0.5
Game Selection: If I want to find an RPG or such covered, usually it's done by DMorgan already. I tend to prefer the kinds of games he writes for over some of AstroBlue's action games, although he does those good justice.
Devin: 1
Astro: 0
Again, two good writers, but it all comes down to:
Devin: 3 + 1.5 + 1 + 1.5 + 1 = 8
Astro: 2 + 2.5 + 2 + 0.5 + 0 = 7
Winner: DMorgan

By the way, Dev: you changed your CRN awhile back.
Just out of curiosity, Rich:
a.) Is there such thing, however, as excess humor?
b.) Does flashy format necessarily mean a better one?
Also, having just had to use Brian's MTPO!! guide, I'm tempted to switch...

Wow, this is tough.
Sulpher writes for games that are close to my heart, the old NES classics. Steve is one of my better friends on here, and writes for the more recent games I have come to enjoy.
However, for all of this, I have to go with Sulpher.
The second match is easier, for me at least. I have used Devin's work many a time, and it has always helped me out. And, while AstroBlue's work seems to be quite good, I can't actually determine how useful it would be to me.
My second vote goes to Devin.

And for the record Steve, seeing as you have nothing better to do than nitpick at votes, I voted for Sulpher over Adrenaline in the last round, so it's not like you stand much of a chance against him, IMO at least.

Just out of curiosity, Rich:
a.) Is there such thing, however, as excess humor?
b.) Does flashy format necessarily mean a better one?
a. Yeah. My ranking was given to quality of humor, though, and not quantity. I like how Steve handles his humor, but if the whole guide completely consisted of jokes, then the match would have gone to Brian.
b. By flashy, I kinda meant impressive looking. Once again, it's kind of based on quality here, but an author here I won't specify wanted to make a format consisting of a bunch of swirly lines, while Jesus gets crucified on the cross in the background, as a section header. That's flashy, maybe even impressive how someone did it, but that's just lame as a section header. So that's my idea there.

*At risk of sucking up, I have to say that Psycho Penguin's guide to
getting through Bevelle Temple quickly in FFX is what swung my vote.
That can NOT have been easy to describe.
