You know, people are going to start thinking this tournament is not
100% honestly run if you start deleting votes that go against you now.
I've seen people change their mind dozens of times before.

SayainPrince accidentally put Devin TWICE before finally putting Dallas down. Might as well void his vote too..
Oh, ****. Don't need to give any ideas now. lol
Back to the topic. Just don't **** around with the votes please. If he votes against you, he votes against you. That's only fair.

Steve, that is horrible logic. Just like his justification for voting
against Devin (it seems like, by his reasoning, it's voting against
Devin, not voting for Dallas).
Go through and count the votes. That one vote isn't gonna make a ton of difference.
Humans, they say, are different from animals because we have the powers of logic. As humans, it is our inalienable right to vote. Therefore, in using horrible logic or arbitrary reasoning to vote, we essentially strip ourselves of our humanity, and thus we take away our right to vote.

You know, when minesweeper went up 6-1 on me last year (despite 3
people voting against me), I didn't think it was a big deal that 2
votes for me were DQed.. until I came back and only lost by 1 vote,
despite having 3 people vote against me and 2 votes for me voided.
Fact: Every vote counts.
Fact: People vote against others all the time.
Fact: If I hate someone's guides, that's reason enough for me to vote for the other guy if their guides is even slightly better. That's common sense.
Don't remove votes for stupid petty reasons. No one's giving reasons so you can't exactly delete votes that give reasonings. That's just dumb.

You ever watch Jeopardy or any quiz show like that?
They'll ask a question like...
"He was a general under Robert E. Lee in the Civil War who died by friendly fire."
The answer would be Stonewall Jackson. "Stonewall Jackson" is correct -- it is the most accurate. "Jackson" would be correct -- while vague, the meaning is taken. "Andrew Jackson" would be wrong -- despite the fact that it has "Jackson" in it, it's totally the wrong person. Thus, the first name (or popular nickname) is optional, and you could get by just fine with only what's required. However, if you do the optional thing and get it wrong, you lose.
Likewise, if Shark had simply not given a rationale for voting against Devin, it would have been fine. If Shark had given a false reason for voting against Devin but one that still made sense, it would have been fine. But because he gave an illogical reason, you can't just accept it.

He said he accidentally voted for Devin (I accidentally voted for
someone in round 1, it happens) and then said 3 or 4 times that he
skimmed over BOTH writers works and liked Dallas's more.

accidentally voted for devin. i feel so dirty.
Why say that? If you made a mistake, change your vote and move on. Commenting like that puts up a flag saying something's up.
#2: not really. hes harrassed me in the past, plus ive never used his FAQs, and ive used dallas' faqs, and i like his more anyway
* I've never "harassed" you in the past.
* Not using a person's FAQs is no basis for voting against them. I honestly never used a majority of peoples' work here, but I won't not vote for them because of it.

i havewnt used devins work because i dont own any of the games he has written for.
Same argument as above. I don't even OWN half the games people in this tourney wrote for, but it's not about that, now is it?
#4: From: jdc 123 | Posted: 7/12/2005 6:48:19 PM | Message Detail
i said i liked dallas' work better, which would say i looked over both of them
That's not what you said in the beginning, rather changing your vote because you had voted for me at first. Listen, if you made a mistake voting, good for you. But just because of how you went about this, and the argument that ensued afterwards, you knew full well what this was leading to.
It's not even about voting against ME either; if this was about any other user on the board, the same action would be taken. But since it's oh so obvious you don't like me and several other people in this topic, doesn't give you any ground to vote against. This is about FAQ work ONLY.
I might not think too favorably of say, Steve, but I'd gladly vote for him since I feel he's a pretty damn good writer, and that's what this tourney is about, and I bet you this same fiasco would occur if I just voted and made a stink about "oh I don't like him so he's not getting my vote". Grow up.
Steve: This isn't about myself since I can already see I'm going to lose, and I really don't give a crap. I already said I don't tolerate people who are here to play games; he clearly is as this topic shows, and his vote will be void. Too bad.

I'm pretty sure shark voted for you in round 1. I'm pretty sure a lot
of people are voting for Dallas because they feel their work is better,
just like a lot of people voted for you in round 1 because they felt
your work was better. If you want the tournament to be fair, then don't
delete votes like that. He said he skimmed over both your works and
found Dallas's to be better. He never said he didn't READ your guides,
he said he never USED them. I've never used a guide of yours
personally, but I've skimmed over them. Same with Dallas. I came to my
conclusion using my skimming of your works. What's so wrong with that?
I rarely use guides. lol

Hey Steve, if I were to vote against:
1. you with the basis that you're a troll and we have a history of not seeing eye to eye on things
2. vote for AstroBlue ONLY because we did a cowrite together
3. Yami because it would vote against Karpah who coincidentally was involved with you a while back
4. and Sulpher because I met him in person
Would you think those votes should be kept? The same sort of logic applies here.

Well I just saw the "harassed me in the past" line. I'm slow tonight. Oh well.
Ignore my ramblings. I guess that's a good enough reason to void his vote. Stupid shark, don't say **** like that. Just stick to the liking Dallas's FAQs more, that's what this tournament is supposed to be about you fool.

Yeah, but he didn't say any of that until he was called out further
along. If none of the previous argument ever took place and I saw a
vote like that because "I harassed him in the past" (which is untrue),
it would be voided simply put. Did you read all of his posts where he
comes up with all this BS before saying "oh, I like Dallas's work
better". How could he come to that conclusion if he's never used any of
my FAQs? That would sort of imply he never looked at them either, so of
course the bias would go towards someone else's work who he might've
actually used. But whatever, I don't care to carry on about this. If I
count that vote, he has to delete all his posts before the one where he
voted "again" and drop this nonsense. Fair enough?

The reason this is such a big deal is because the vote is against
Devin, and they accuse him of voiding it because he it is against him
and he thought he could get away with it.
Here are my thoughts on this accusation.
- It was completely justified. But, I think that Shark and Devin's... animosity may have encouraged to Devin to void it. There are plenty of other votes in the past that should have been voided, though, which makes it seem like Devin is selective. Hell, I'm surprised my vote against DEngel wasn't voided, because I was out of line making that comment anyways (although I actually do think Meowthnum1 should have won, which he did). But, what about comments about game range, seeds, and the like? Like, "he/she/it (joking about the it) writes for unFAQed games," or "a 64-seed losing to a 1-seed is blasphemy," or many other reasons. I think that formatting is the weakest reason you could give for any match; it is my personal opinion that writing style and content takes priority over formatting. Formatting should be used only if they are equal in all other categories. But, this is my opinion. On the other hand, seed and game range and choice of games and all that nonsense do not affect the quality of guide, and should not be counted. Of course, this would void many previous votes, but the rules are the rules.
- PP is right. Although he is a good writer, I can honestly say that the match would've been a lot closer between he and Siniroth had Sini not plagiarized. On the other hand, Penguin would've won anyways. Then there's the unknown factor. PP is popular on the boards and far more prolific than his competitors were. He was going to win. But, not everyone was being honest, as I think that his competitors should've gotten a few votes. Even Alex got a few votes against Adrenaline, who seems to be on a pedestal (I'm not saying Alex is bad, I'm saying Adrenaline is like the ultimate FAQer in voters' minds) in this tournament. Perhaps a Tournament of Champions like in the current Summer Content would give other old-timers a chance.
- I think that reasons should be required. It would not end popularity/hate votes, but it would reduce it. Just list a few things that are ineligible as reasons.
In summary, Devin was right in voiding the vote, but voiding should be exercised more often, not just when it concerns Devin personally, but when it breaks rules. Otherwise, we have quarrels like this.
---

Amount of work gets you into this tournament, it does not win it for you.
Look at Alex. # 1 in the KB department, the best of the bunch. Look at Adrenaline. # 64 in that department, the worst you could possibly be and still get into the tourney. But, Adrenaline still won. Amount of work really does not constitute as a good reason for voting, in my opinion. Even if you are similar authors, amount of work should have no bearing on votes. There are many good examples. Take AstroBlue for another example. At # 63, he beat ASchultz at # 2.
Although I agree that it may affect votes, this kind of thing should not be done, especially as a reason. It affects votes, maybe even determines them, but it *should* have to bearing. In a perfect world....

Although I agree that it may affect votes, this kind of thing should not be done, especially as a reason. It affects votes, maybe even determines them, but it *should* have to bearing. In a perfect world....

I have something to say.
For Shark
Shark made a stupid mistake. First, he states that he never used Devin's FAQs, then he says he likes Dallas' FAQs better. How is that possible? You have to use both in order to judge that way.
Secondly, this tournament is about which contributor you feel is better, so you should look at everyone's work. If you do not, then abstain from voting.
For Devin
Devin, I don't think you can void this vote unless you force everyone to provide reasons. How can you expect people to vote based on a logical reason, if you do not force them to provide those reasons? Yea, he made it known, and it is stupid, but you can't void this. I still think this vote should count.

The only thing that separates Siniroth and I is amount of work. Really,
what makes my guides better than his? It's not like Alex vs Adrenaline
when they're different styles of writers for different styles of games.
It may not seem fair, but I bet it waas PART of the reason. A lot of people do geninuely like my guides though so I may be talking out of my ass (which is not unusual)

Even if he's never used them, Shark could have scanned through some of
them to determine quality. I do that occasionally at the beginning of
these.

^ Or abstained from voting.
But, the dilemma lies in the fact that shark provided a reason, one that is unjustified.
IMO, a good quarter of voters vote on popularity, so I couldn't care less about stupid reasons...

a.) Reasons can get redundant (I like this author's format/content better)
b.) You can forge reasons.
Kirbs: You can call me Trace, you know. Out of curiosity, what did you say in round one? You've got me curious.

For acting like a damn child, I'll just leave your vote void. You couldn't just shut up and drop this, now could you have?
Kirby - This is the most blatant one, though. If I saw that sorta thing happening for other people, I'd jump in and do the same thing myself. But since this involves me in particular, I happen to be able to take action on it. Is that wrong?

I take a long time to post, and someone probably already said this by the time this is up, but...
I said that I thought it was shameful that DEngel requested money as an "experiment" in his guides. However, this did not determine my vote. I just felt I should share this.
Remember, the reason that one gives reason is to let the losers know what they can improve on. If you're not giving constructive criticism, don't provide a reason.
Speaking of which, where can I improve? I am getting massacred!
Also, I should stop posting due to possible disruptive posts.

Kirb: Table of contents, and it's sometimes hard to distinguish parts
of the walkthrough from another (i.e. lists, boss strats, etc.). Like I
said, though, you two are about even in terms of quality. And you've
certainly written for a lot of games that are likely to be looked at.
The only thing that kicked War Doc over you -- for me, at least -- was
that a lot of the games he cover have never been covered before.
But it was probably the closest match.

Not talking about why you decided to void it or not, but that is a really bad reason to void a vote.
The point is that the vote was already voided. Devin gave him a chance to fix everything and to get his vote unvoided. He didn't.
