Seems someone once again has resorted to plagiarism to suit their own needs... The culprit at this time is CWilley, whose Super Smash Bros. Melee FAQ was recently posted tonight, located here:

But anyway... Take a look at the list of Bonus Points from my own FAQ. Then compare them to those listed in CWilley's guide. They're listed, word for word from my guide! May I also point out that for a few of them, he seemed to have changed the last 2 or 3 words in the description to make it look like he didn't take from me, although it's blatantly obvious he did.
One more thing that leads me to believe he's taking others' info without permission is this: he has NO credits section in his guide at all! That's a bit odd, seeing that there's truly no way in hell that ANYONE can find the exact methods of unlocking every last character/stage/sound test/etc. without looking at SOME form of a code list/another guide.
As with the previous incident back in March with Brakker-Z and my Paper Mario guide, take this as you will. I feel that I've caught CWilley red-handed and there's no way around it, therefore it is plagiarism. That is all...

You'd think the dude would at least try to re-write it to give somewhat of a cover up! Maybe he's just kinda stupid. Plagiarism? It makes you wonder if he even read CJayC's writing guide. I guess that's like the only downfall to the world of FAQ Writing, you put yourself at risk of people stealin' your work.
Also I'm especially pissed off about this because this guy stole my FAQ and didn't even bother to keep up with the latest revisions. I still remember the site...plagiarism, when is it goin to stop? We should just get along like one happy family!

OK, hold on, Devin. I thought you had a legitimate complaint, but I just looked at my game, and his aren't copied from you - they're copied from the game. (As I assume yours are.) If you're just complaining about the Bonus Points section, they're all taken directly from the game description, and they all appear in the same order in the in-game list, so what makes you think he copied? I mean, if I were going to make a list of the bonuses and their descriptions, they'd look the same - because I would just copy it from the game. And what is he supposed to do?
If there's other things that are copies, I'm sorry, I'm too lazy right now too look. (Finals suck...) But if it's just that, I don't think that it is plagiarism in any way.

I don't jump to such conclusions when it comes to plagiarism. I spent a decent amount of time cross-analyzing his FAQ and my own, and came to the conclusion that he took from me, therefore this predicament is what CWilley is in at this point. I suggest you take the time to look at both our guides, particularly the Bonus Points sections, and THEN come back and tell me he didn't copy...

| I'm not certain as I'm nowhere near my Gamecube right now (I'm currently at work), but it looks like the descriptions for the bonus points were taken from the game and are in the same order as the game. In other words, it looks to me like he didn't copy you, he copied the game (as did you). If this is the case, I agree with tgeek. He shouldn't be treated this way if all he did was copy info from the game. However... if I'm wrong and he DID plagiarize, then I believe his FAQ shouldn't see the light of day. |

I kinda resent being called stupid. I have no excuse but I have read over the writing guide before. I've submitted a lot of FAQs before. I apologize to Devin Morgan but I find it rather rude how some of you are acting. I realize I did something wrong but everyone doesn't have to act so cold-hearted about it. Just a question: is everyone glad my FAQ is gone because it plagerised the bonus section or because it was BAD? Personally, I find that most people are just looking at the plagerised part and say "That's a no-no" and don't even bother actually reading the FAQ. But I'll stop there. Again, DMorgan, I'm sorry. No hard feelings. Let's let what's passed passed.

Here's a little lesson of my own that I've called "being polite." I have apologized to everyone and Devin many times. I have realized what I did was wrong and have no excuse for it. I have rewritten my FAQ, added an apology section, and resubmitted it.
Now, how about everyone here puts themselves in my shoes right now. You're being called stupid for your act and misjudged that your FAQ was bad because of one mistake. "No one will forget this." Would you really care if no one forgets about it? In reality, they WILL forget. But who cares if they don't? What most people on this board fail to grasp is the concept that you don't know many (if any) of these people. This is not real life. Its a way of complete strangers to talk to each other. They can't hurt you. You don't know them. All they can do is talk. Only those with low self-esteem and a slight lack of reality will get hurt by this talk. In my opinion, everyone here should just get over it.
I did my "criminal act." I got my well-deserved punishment. I understood my unexcusable mistake. I rewrote that section, as well as other parts that may have been misjudged as "plagerised." I resubmitted it and hope I can be given a second chance. And here's an idea for all of you: how about you actually try reading my FAQ instead of discriminating against it because of one error you could probably care less about?

Orca, speaking from experience, I wouldn’t go rummaging through every single guide for the same game as yours to make sure no one took your stuff, but it might not be a bad idea to skim some of the lesser known authors, because obviously someone with a substantial amount of work, hopefully wouldn’t be dumb enough to lose it all over something that petty. I can’t say that I’m as experienced in the routine as Devin, but that’s really all you can do without looking like a paranoid writer. BTW, congrats on COTM Orca, nice Halo FAQ (which will probably be ripped off sooner or later ;P)

PAC, realize THIS before you try to disregard what I said.
Not only is what you did wrong, it's ILLEGAL. Devin could very easily SUE you. The fact that you admitted plagerizing, a very serious offense under US Law, you could be in big trouble. Don't think I'm serious? Ask CJayC, or simply go to the "How to Write A FAQ" section and it'll basically say the same thing, why NOT to copy someone's FAQ. It's not a moral thing to do and it's illegal. Simple.
Of course I was wrong in saying no one will ever forget about this... but the last person that tried copying Devin's stuff and got away with it... he's forever known for that one thing, and no one here likes him. I'm just letting you know.
And you may have re-tooled your FAQ... but it's doubtful CJayC'll put it back up. OH WELL!

Yes, I think it's now a known fact that I do skim through FAQs for games that I am currently/have previously covered. I do that mostly nowadays to protect myself from plagiarism. Ever since the last plagiarist incident with Brakker-Z back in March 2001, I've been doing that every time I put out a new guide. Nothing against you or any other writer, but that's just what it comes down to now. :/

After an investigation of sorts, he will. PAC's fate lies in what CJayC decides. Since he admitted it and apologized, he might unfortunatly get away with it. However, if no one discovered it, he would have never admitted it. So it's a lose-lose situation for PAC. He might get away on GameFAQs... but will his conscience?

And as Matt said, I don't necessarily check EVERY FAQ for every game I wrote for. I basically do checks only from guides of people that are (a) new, (b) unfamiliar to me, or a combination of the two. I know a good amount of the authors around here, seeing that I've been contributing since mid-1998... So I feel I can trust quite a bit of people around. It's just the newer folks I try to keep an eye on at times, no offense...

Can you people give it a rest, really? I feel terrible for what I have done. I never thought I could do such a terrible thing. I didn't even realize I was doing it. I get wrapped up in things too easily and forget what's going on around me. I'm just so surprised at how immature and unforgiving everyone can act. And I'm yet to see DMorgan reply to my apology. Are you cold-hearted as well? I respect you, Devin. I respect a lot of users on this board. And I'm not sucking up so I can "get away" with this little "trick" everyone's obsessed with thinking I pulled. No matter how much I say it was a truthful accident, no one will ever forgive me because of their own insecurity. I find it quite sad, actually. And don't get upset because I'm trying to stand up for myself or I'm using "big words" or something. Everyone makes mistakes, people. What's also sad is that no one even cared about my FAQ until something went wrong with it. I find that terrible and unforgiving myself.
Oh, and have fun sueing a minor * for copying a small bit of a FAQ, a written document on the Internet that has no money value but was generously written and posted to help others with a FAQ (keep in mind the copied bit was used for the same kind of document).
* Don't even bother with "9-year-old" remarks. That just shows the kind of immature person you really are. If you really care, I'm 14. I'm extremely mature for my age and am sickened by the immature people I often face, real life and net life. Don't believe me? Why should I care, exactly?
