Thanks to one sociopath who got clever (registering the abandoned freemail addresses of long-gone contributors and claiming them as his own), it is currently impossible to register existing contributor accounts with new board accounts.

I don't know a quick and simple way to fix this, unfortunately. But I'll see if I can't come up with something soon.

I somewhat thought about how easy it would be to do that when the contributor registration came up.

If I were you I'd just ban this guy's IP, unregister the accounts he got, and quietly slip it under the rug hoping no one else gets that clever.

So, pretty much what you are saying is, that if you get banned, you cannot use your Contributor account on the new board name? Why didn't you just ban his IP for stealing others names?

You can't ban people's IP addresses. It doesn't work.

Furthermore, once this one guy gets caught, there's nothing stopping him from announcing what he's done to the rest of the world or someone else figuring it out.

He started slow and was pretty clever about it, but then he got greedy. That's how these things usually work.

The problem is in trying to undo the damage that's been done. It's not going to be easy at all; there's no changelog of contributor merges.

Can't there be some sort of ID system similar to the underage user rule? Or a primary email adress to double-confirm everything? This could be a problem in the future....

No, no, not CRP, a system similar to the Private email form. What I'm saying is, if you wanted to, the form can be used as a safeguard in case something happends on the message board. For example, a user can put either his first or last name, address, or some other info on a special confirmation list, similar to the Private email that others can't see. If something happends, you can just use a Student ID or some other form of Identification to confirm you are that person, and bam, it is registerd on that name.

The thing is, he was going after contributors from 1998-2000... People that have long left GameFAQs and let their Hotmail or other freemail accounts expire.

Today, I'd imagine that the only people who are registering existing contributor accounts are those who are just using more than one board username. This should be fairly simple logic to add in; only allow registration if the contributor ID is in active use. Otherwise, force it to e-mail.

I'll look at something along these lines soon... Right now, I've just got to clean up what damage I can from this kid.

You could try using zip codes. A user registering a name for a past account would have to match a zip code provided for the previous account registering the contributions.

Of course it is not a perfect system but if you tell them to make sure they remember the same zip code if the get banned.

I am not sure how easy of a process this would be to implement but it might work.

Jeff, isn't there something CNet can do about this person? Like lawyers (he did steal the work of other people and claim them as his own) or tracking him down or setting up a system to track people that do this? CNet probably has other people that know how do use VBScript or whatever you programmed GameFAQs in and maybe they can take a look at your current system and propose changes/improvements for security.

You are so right Brian. Seems that people have nothing else better to do with their lives. Oh well, I still believe that things balance themselves out. Those who gain things by theft and lying will get theirs eventually.

Sorry to hear about this one Jeff. It's hard to put in a lot of hard work and have someone pull this kind of stunt and ruin for those who actually do the work.

Maybe if you had to use your main (original) account to select a preference that enabled other accounts to register with that contributor profile. For old accounts, there would be nobody to activate the feature, so you wouldn't be able to register with that contributor profile, but if it was activated, then you could set up a special password for that.

Just trying to think of something, this is the best I could come up with.

It was just a helpful suggestion, no evil intentions here, BSulpher ^_^

^ Yes. Speaking of hijacking a board account AND a CRP, look at this guy (It's the Elite board but you can see UIP's nonetheless)

http://cgi.gamefaqs.com/boards/whois.asp?user=1071&board=423&topic=11386056

RLafaurie is an old contributor (1998-99) but his CRP was recently re-registered under a completely different (and stupid) name.

Wouldn't matter, considering that anyone with a router can change their MAC address in seconds.

The mac address is unique to each NIC card...you can't change it, because it's burned on the NIC.

At least, that's what I was told back in school. If a router can change that, time's have really changed...

You can't change it for a NIC, but that's only if you have your broadband modem connected directly to your PC via a NIC. If you have the modem connected to a router, and the router connected to your PC, you can change the router's MAC address whenever you like. I do it occasionally when I want a new IP.
