I'd like a World History (from democracy till the present) and a U.S.
History high school credential, as well as a government credential.
Maybe one in economics, too.

I didn't think I could be a teacher until I met James Wolpaw. He was my film teacher, but he's also a regional filmmaker.
Being a teacher isn't my goal, but it wouldn't be so bad if I could teach whatever I wanted.

"Those who can, do.
Those who cannot, teach."
- George Bernard Shaw
No disrespect to any teachers or aspiring teachers on this board, but when I look back at whom from my high school class now teaches, it clearly wasn't the students who ever did well in high school. It makes me wonder how the education system will ever improve when the most mediocre students are the ones doing the teaching.

I find that highly offensive Johnny, as both of my parents were great
high school students and both were great teachers. However, I am a poor
student in contrast (by marking standards), so I suppose I could be a
teacher! ;)

I too find that offensive, Johnny. I'm sorry if you had bad teachers,
but there are tons of good ones out there. Then again, I went through
private schools, and that might be why I have such high opinions of
teachers.
But as anyone who knows me knows, I hold myself to really high standards, especially in these past couple of years. Thus, I refuse to believe that only the poorly educated teach.

That's the thing, though. I doubt I would teach at anything less than a
private high school or a university so that I wouldn't have to deal
with the idiots.

Oh, there are still idiots in private high schools. Good luck getting
employed in the decent ones anyway. It's been my experience that they
tend to employ older teachers anyway (though that's not always the
case). History is a pretty cool subject though, and I would probably
have taken Modern and Ancient in HS is it hadn't been an essay based
subject. That turns it into a BS subject, which it certainly shouldn't
be.

I did not go to a private school, so I acknowledge there may have been
a huge gap in both the quality of the teachers and the quality of the
students I knew who became teachers. Nevertheless, I think the point is
true in the general sense. How many people in the top 5% of a
graduating class, who go to top universities, do you think end up being
teachers? Yes, the question is rhetorical.
This should not be surprising or insulting. If someone goes to a good university and has the option of being a teacher or of taking a job in the private sector making twice as much money, which avenue do you think seems more attractive? Especially if the student funded his/her own education and has $100K+ in student loans to repay. Those who do still choose to become teachers are the ones who really love teaching and are undoubtedly some of the best teachers you will ever have.
The others, and what I would say are the majority, are people who became teachers because they really had no skills or aptitude to do anything else. Mediocre students (B/C level) who went to mediocre colleges and think that the teaching lifestyle is appealing. There are far more of these people around then there should be.
Sorry if that's offensive, but I'd wager that it's the reality moreso than it isn't. I'm not trying to discredit teachers -- I've had more than my share of great ones -- but I am trying to point out that the system is not exactly geared towards recruiting the best and the brightest. And currently, it doesn't.

Hey, I have seen the enw wave of teachers that are replacing my parents
and their colleagues... not too many of them give me much hope either.
However, I would like to think that the private school boards (ie
Catholic boards around here) make a concerted effort to hire brighter
teachers than the drivel the public boards typically get in their
schools.

Yeah, I see what you mean. That's why physics teachers are so rare. If
you major in physics, you can get a job that pays three times what
teaching pays.
Nevertheless, it's something I enjoy (much moreso than anything else I could do with a degree in history).

One piece of disapproval I had with my history teachers was their
political emotion. While I'm a democrat at heart, I wouldn't show my
students any Michael Moore documentary, for example.

Haha.
See, I don't think it makes a difference. The greatest history teacher I had was in tenth grade. He was a hardcore Republican, and it was very obvious. He and I went back and forth arguing some things sometimes. Lotsa fun.
The only thing he taught on with incredible bias was the stuff on Karl Marx, Marxism, Communism, etc.

You were arguing politics in tenth grade? Some people take politics and all it's crap way too seriously. Most people over here don't really give a stuff, and we have compulsory voting. <3 being laid back.

Man, I was arguing politics in seventh grade. I had no clue what I was talking about until ninth or tenth grade.
Thing is, I went to an Episcopalian private school (despite not being Episcopalian) in northeast Florida. Therefore, I was one of maybe five liberals at the school.
I had to set everyone straight :). After awhile, though, I didn't really bring it up until someone else brought it up.
