Today is my 4-year GameFAQs anniversary.

Seems like a long time.

Over the last two days, I've discovered three of my friends from the theatre department are younger than me when I was certain they were older than me.

And I've got a year and a half to go. I'll be twenty-three by the time I'm out of here. It's making me feel like Anakin Skywalker.

Eh, age is such a trivial thing. The last time someone asked me how old I was, it took me awhile to remember, since it has become so meaningless. Honestly, there's no difference left for me if I'm 18 or if I'm 20. It's really the same thing. I just had a birthday go by about a week ago, and didn't even notice until yesterday when one of my buddies offered me a late gift because she was out of town.

A year and a half isn't that long. At least the end of your schooling is in sight. What do you plan on do afterwards?

You're the second person today to say that. There may be something to me being a multiple birth that makes me acutely aware of my age.

And as far as what I'm gonna do when I'm out of here? I don't have any idea. I'm working on right now for now.

Age is trivial until we're old, but by then it's too late to appreciate being young.

>Well, 21 makes hell lot of difference.

C'mon Hypro. We live in Texas. When the hell is the last time you were ever carded? I don't drink, but three of the gas stations near me would sell me alcohol if I wanted it.

>When I'm 21 I'll be able to legally own handguns then without having to give my dad money and have him go an buy it and then me "borrowing" it.

This is apparently different state to state. In Texas, the legal age to purchase is 18, which is why it makes no difference to me.

>Everything that can be legal is legal at 18/19 up here.

Eh. Not like anyone actually pays attention to age laws down here anyway.

It's funny, my 3 year FAQ anniversery will be coming up next month. It took me the first 2 years to make it to 100 FAQs, but when the anniversery takes place (April 18th I believe), it would of taken me 1 year to make it to 200 FAQs (because I will be able to make another 9 maps between now and then). What's up with that?

Here is why, Starfighters: to hone your skill in reviewing, it takes years. 98% of clowns submit incoherent garbage to this website. Tons of people fail to use evincing enough language, or they just plain out fail to cogently describe a particular game with enough efficiently to have a call for action by the reader. By that, I mean their writing is so weak, so fundamentally flawed and pathetic, the reader will leave the piece with no real feeling if they should buy a game or avoid it other than the conclusion which will lucidly state "this game iz good bi it."

You also improve on a basis of sentence to sentence and how to effectively use the language to your advantage. You don't improve by opening up MS paint and trying to copy something that someone else has already done (haven’t people already seen the maps, but just want reinforcement?) It requires creativity; you’re trying to copy someone else’s work, which requires no real talent. I could start map making tomorrow and probably be as efficient as you are today. You could start writing creative pieces, narratives, and reviews and be on my level in two years.
From: Psycho_Penquin | Posted: 3/29/2005 2:11:08 AM | Message Detail
Very few people read reviews to be inspired or to feel like they read a good piece. They read it to either see if they want to buy a game, or to dog it because of a bad score.

FFMrebirth: That's quite a lot of crap you have in that post, backed up by your own preconceptions and assumptions.

>It requires creativity; you’re trying to copy someone else’s work, which requires no real talent.
>I could start map making tomorrow and probably be as efficient as you are today.

>. That's not images ripped from an emulator and patched together. That's made more or less from scratch, by hand (or whatever term applies to the computer equivalent). I'd like to see you make something comparable by the end of tomorrow (given you have no previous practice).

>You could start writing creative pieces, narratives, and reviews and be on my level in two years.

...

By your "level", do you mean something like this:
"Tons of people fail to use evincing enough language, or they just plain out fail to cogently describe a particular game with enough efficiently to have a call for action by the reader. By that, I mean..."

Gotta tell you, using fancy words to write a sentence does not make "your level" particularly impressive. The idea that you would write out an unnecessarily long sentence using uncommon words in a forum designed for, more or less, casual conversations is asinine to a fault. To go and follow the sentence directly with a layman's version shows it is utterly without purpose. You could have just left the succeeding sentence, and removed the one before it. Except perhaps to inflate your ego and try to belittle the rest of us. If I didn't know better (actually, I don't), it would seem to me that the entire point of that sentence was to foolishly flaunt a higher vocabulary to those you feel are of a lesser intellectual capacity.

What is truly ironic is that the sentence in question was written to criticize some writers for reviews that failed to get the point across. And yet you go out of your way to write in a manner that most people would find nauseating before they found informative.

From: StarFighters76 | Posted: 3/29/2005 3:19:50 AM | Message Detail
You know what, forget it. Sorry I caused such an uproar. If anything, I'll just crawl back into the corner where I was at before.

So how is it that I get tons of emails asking how to do this or that when they read my maps, MAINLY on the Silent Hill series, instead of reading FAQs.

You could start writing creative pieces, narratives, and reviews and be on my level in two years.

Okay that is the most superficial thing I have EVER heard on this board, and no disrespect to you (or anyone else), but if that's what it takes to get on "your level", then I sure don't want it.

No you know, nevermind, I'll just let you all be in your own group and just go off and do my thing myself. If this is what I know how to do the best, and really enjoy it, then that is all that is important.

Haha, my assumptions. Evince isn't a large word. I'm dealing with writers here and I expect some level of competency and understanding of English. If anything, you learned a new word. Why should I feel the need to dumb-down my thoughts? Atom Edge, no disrespect, but when I wrote that, it just flowed naturally since I've been doing it for so long. I don't mean to 'belittle' anyone with the way I write at all. In my book, that's how you handle people. If you can over power your opponent to where they just realize they're too stupid to compete, then it's an easy victory.

I do it a lot on the review board, which is where some really amazing arguers who crush my ass reside. So I've just learned to survive there and bring my tactics to other boards, which usually don't go over too well with the community, haha.

Anyway, I was IM'ed earlier about the Starfighters thing, and I"ve seen him go on about his maps on other boards. It's great he's proud, but the constant talking about them wears and tears after a while. I suppose others were getting annoyed at the time, and I decided to take it upon myself to say something.

There you have it. I really don't feel like arguing in this topic this time around =/
From: King Kool | Posted: 3/29/2005 5:26:20 AM | Message Detail
FF: I have a test that I use for words to see if they're large words. It doesn't work every time, but it tends to.

1. I have a fairly good vocabulary that I'm somewhat proud of (though not much; they're just words). So, if I haven't heard of the word, chances are good it's not a commonly used word.

2. If you look at the word's source, if it is a direct descendant from a Latin word, there's a good chance it's a word used only by those perusing the thesaurus or English teachers (This word happens to stem from evincere, which means "to prove."). This is especially true for younger people like most everyone here (like, not over 35).

But vocabulary, no matter how good or bad, is never a substitute for intellect. Behavior is typically a more accurate indicator, such as eschewing fancy words and being confident in their message.

So, I guess what I'm getting at is that maps have their place in the ecosystem of volunteer game assistance. A picture can demonstrate the solution to a puzzle with unalloyed clarity. To describe them with words would be excessive and probably less clear.

I wouldn't call them "FAQs," per se, but to use them as an attempt to undercut a writer's integrity is unfair. It's just a different kind of help, in the same way that codes and reviews aren't the same. It's all assistance, and that's the one thing everyone on this board has in common.

Maps have their place here by all means. They help to clarify certain parts of a game that I feel would be too tedious/hard to explain in regular text. I'm sure you've had plenty of those instances over the years with video games. But to say maps are on the same level as FAQs, is downright wrong in my opinion. If someone says they wrote 100+ FAQs or whatever, I'm going to their page fully expecting that much in text files and that's it. I think the whole point here is that maps are not equal to FAQs, and thus shouldn't be held on the same pedestal as them. Not to undermine mapmakers, I'm just saying it like it is.

I can seriously picture FFM spending about 20 minutes typing up that post. He takes out the thesaurus for every word and tries to find one far less common and more complicated than it has to be. That's not writing creatively, that's giving people a headache. I hope you don't fill your reviews with that kind of detritus (whoamg look at me!).

I for one certainly believe that Mike has contributed far more to this site than you have. The majority of people come here to get help, not read reviews contrived by elitist writers with a preconceived notion that they are better than others because they know how to use a dictionary.

Maps = FAQs. They answer questions, and provide detailed information on a game. Just because it isn't a text file doesn't mean it isn't important.

But seriously, there's no comparison. Looking at AE's example he posted earlier in that topic, I wouldn't have a clue how to do it. And that map has earnt him even more respect from me.

The only thing similar between FAQ writers and map makers is that there are some good ones and some really really bad ones. Some people turn their choice of contribution into an art form.
