Welcome. The purpose of this topic is to provide a one stop reference to all the various FAQ hosting sites, and whether or not you should allow them to publish your works, as well as a list of good sites which will give your guides a better coverage.

I Have An E-Mail. What Should I Do?

When I wrote my first guide, I got E-Mails from IGN, DLH and Neoseeker. I let them all publish my works as they are good sites.

When you get an email, you should check out the site. If the site looks good, check out one of the guides. I generally do not like ads on the page with my guide, so if a site has ads, I say no. Next, look at the sites credibility. If it is a site that looks like a thief, ask at GameFAQs or in this thread for some help.

In the end, where you want your guides is up to you. For instance I have had 4 or 5 small sites ask for my San Andreas guide, but only granted permission to one.


I Think .... Has Stolen My Guide!

First, get the URL of your guide. Write a message to the sites admin stating that your guide was posted at www....... without permission. Please remove, or face legal action. If they refuse, take it a step further, and get some people from here behind you, and attempt to sway the owner by force.

If worse comes to worse, you can take legal action, but bear in mind it may not end favourably.

This is vital. Check out my Civilization III FAQ http://db.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/file/civilization_iii_e.txt for my latest copyright. It has a lot of stuff and is big, but who can find a loophole?

The URL for Dirty Little Helper is not correct.

A hint when it comes to unauthorized publishing of your FAQ: if the webmaster of said site is unwilling to cooperate in removing it, you still have another step before legal action: contact whoever's providing their webspace, and/or their sponsors. These are people who can put a lot more pressure on the site than you can, and they are typically a lot more concerned about keeping their behinds covered.

while you may think that the topic's inentions are not sincere, I can tell you that ir was deemed important enough that links to other sites (which is possibly a KOS normally) were allowed to be posted.

Additionally, I feel that I deserve credit for providing the copyright, and if you dislike the topic in any way, you should speak to the higher authorities that approved of its posting, as well as the other members of the FCB that were behind me all the way in creating this topic.

In my FAQs (and even this topic) I give credit when I have used another person's information, and so I feel that it is only polite that people do the same (in fact it is common etiquite to credit information from other sources).

In fact, this topic in a way is about sites using guides without giving credit to the authors. Please do not clutter up these topics with your unneccisary comments again, because I have put this up to help people, as well as make the public concious of FAQ theft. Please do not kick me in the teeth for doing so.

Since it is Michael Sarich's copyright message that he created through is own idea and expression, he has every right to do what he pretty much wants with it, even asking others to credit usage for it. IMO, I disagree with it, but since it's his, there's not much anyone except him can do about it.

Heh, I don't see what's to gain over a copyright message. GameFAQs has their own copyright message, but allow others to freely use it. I guess Michael just wants others to know that he created that specific message and does not want others to act like it's theirs.

Its just like if a site wishes to use your guide, they have to give you credit, even if they dont want to. Or you could sue them (although i wont go that far over a stupid copyright)

Well. this is a great thing here. Very useful. I would like to point out a few things, though...

1.) THis was very odd, but I saw Neoseeker using one of my guides without permission (well someone else did, he just told me), and that confused me. Wasn't neoseeker good?

2.) Avon, be quiet. He created a good topic to help epople, not for publicity (although he's getting it in the process ;-)), and he should get credit for his copyright, since he made it up!

With sites like Neoseeker DLH and IGN, they will ask oce and then take each guide after that. As long as they asked you once, its OK.

Also, if there is a guide you wish to be a GameFAQs exclusive, simple EMail the webmasters and tell them please do not use this guide. You can use the rest, but not (URL)

Yeah, there have been a few reports about supercheats sometimes taking FAQs without permission, but then later asking permission. Usually, if you find a guide of yours taken before permission was asked, you can request the guide to be removed and it will be removed by Dennis, ASAP.
