I saw a top 5 FAQers list, and I was wondering if you have ever heard of...

Wigeoninfantry
Dahui
Joekenton
Ebony Ivory
Jamesspliff

Probably not. What I don't get is that people are so caught up with FAQers like Bsulpher, A L E X, Psychopenguin, etc.

I just started FAQing a month and a half ago, I have four FAQs up and 3 in the making...

Wait, so are you mad that no one put you as their top 5 FAQer list? I've started FAQing a couple months ago and I find my FAQs to be pretty good (unfinished, but good). I would be highly surprised if I was on somebody's list. You make it seem like a month and a half of FAQing is a long time.

I hope you don't win the bounty for that Midnight Club 3 FAQ. It should be at least [170 KB]. Put some track strategies in, online strategies for tuning upgrades, and maybe even some pointers on opinions of the cars.

Good job with the kindness and random brackets.

The reason people get so "caught up" with people like BSulph and Alex is because they're really awesome. Then again, absolutely every FAQer is as good as you think they are (so that the top five list is by no means definitive).

Those folks are all highly active socially on the boards. Not to mention occasionally frikkin' hilarious (I'm looking at you, Alex). Maybe that helps give them a higher profile. They definitely deserve to be in the top ranks, IMO.

And I wouldn't pay too much heed to any 'top x' list on the interweb. Too much risk of fanboy-ism.

I'd have to agree with Mr. Penguin on this one.

Perhaps given an infitinite amount of time with every guide on this site, we could all form more accurate lists of our personal favourites, but alas we are victims of circumstance and must work with what we know. I for one would not call that biased.

(As for the topic, I have indeed heard of Da Hui, as have many I imagine, though you don't make it easy, writing his name wrong)

Hehe I think most if not all people here have heard of me since I look here all of the time. I'm not popular because I don't write for popular new games, I mainly write for the old games. I really don't care. People who e-mail always seem to love my FAQs and that's the respect that I want.

I'm not surprised to not be mentioned, I mean I only wrote for those games nobody has ever heard of. I'm on these boards with the most popular and best writers on GameFAQs write now. I don't expect to compare to them. Especially since I've only written for about a year (even though A I e x has too but he's just a machine.) If you want to buy some popular games I'll FAQ them for everybody and put them on the internet and then people will think of me as their favorite, since I'd be more popular. But since I don't have a job, I can only work with what I got...

Someday I'm going to encounter some kind of paradox that absolutely fries my circuits, shorting out my internal sensors and complete frying all my secret FAQing algorithms. Everyone will be saying "Wow... I was only kidding about the machine comments... who would have guessed" and all will fall silent for a period of time until the version 1.2 model is released.

As for Mr. b500's question, I believe it serves solely to further the topic creator's frustration with a lack of instant gratification.

Oh no, you didn't make a top 5 list. How are you ever going to fill that space in your trophy case now?

Try writing on-and-off for 6 years. I've never won a contest or made a Top5 list or any of that nonsense. However, every once in a while, I get an e-mail saying how useful my FAQ was for a game and it made the game enjoyable again for the player. In my opinion, that's ten times better than some kid saying "Yur FAQs rock 'cause teh format is cool." You're writing for the wrong reasons if you only write to gain recognition on a message board which 1/100th of all FAQ writers attend.

I've heard of four of the five listed, haven't heard of Joe Kenton, but I think the other four all wrote for GT4. I've seen two of them elsewhere as well.

I'll never be on a top 5 list, although my work is fairly good quality in general. I don't expect to be though. I did get somebody thanking me for writing for My Hero the other day though - I'm a bit surprised anybody even reads my Master System FAQs.

Whenever I get an e-mail saying that someone thought my guide was great to them, then that makes everything worthwhile. If I get recognition in the process, great, but the whole purpose of FAQ writing is to help others out.

WARNING! WALL OF TEXT AHEAD!

Yhe idea, Mr Topic creator, for me anyways, is to enjoy the FAQ making process. It makes me a better gamer, allows me to think, categorize, and strategize in games much more clearly and quickly, allows better memory when playing games I'm not FAQing, improves my writing skills, and is a hobby! The idea of me getting into it is personal desire, not recognition.

I will grant that recognition and prizes are nice, but they are not what it's about. If you wanted to gain notoriety around here, it would take you a MINIMUM of at least 6 months, and that's if you became a f'n psyched out robot from hell on crack who devoted all his thought and energy to churning out FAQs quickly, and not for fame or fortune.

Notoriety is never gained quickly around here, and as such it has some value. When people admire Alex, Devin, PP, mike, or any of the other writers, (map artists still count :P) it is because they have done a lot of high quality work over a long, or short, period of time. Few people can churn out high quality work quickly. Most who try churn out crappy, plagiarized, work quickly. so you might say that that is the path to the dark side of FAQing, except the sith are generally wussies who can't overthrow one forum, much less the galaxy. (See Robbienewt, Sith FAQer)

Take me for example. I have been writing at a relitively slow pace for 2 years.* If I was in it for notoriety, I would have dropped out long ago. But it's a hobby to me, and one that I find rewarding. I have only, recently, begun to gain any notoriety, with one FotM award and being on someone's list who I don't aven know who they are as one of the top 5 FAQers.

*The stuff before that doesn't count as FAQs, but steaming piles of BYPASS BLOCKED. As a matter of fact, I think I'll upload a bit of work I still have from January 2002.

It's just like kirbyroks said. If you want recognition, you can't just make a whine topic here for it; you need to WORK. You need to turn out quality guides, and unless you're a machine or something, it's going to take you about a year if you want to make someone's top 5 list, and that's if you're a fairly fast and motivated writer, write for good games, and at the same time write good quality guides. A month and a half is NOTHING.

Look at the names you picked out. BSulpher, for one. He's written for tons of games in which no one has ever heard of, but he's a valuable addition to this site because of having written for so many NES games, many of which have never had an FAQ posted up for them before. Think of the people who are having trouble with those games but can't get help. That's where BSulpher comes in. As for Alex and Psycho Penguin, they write for very popular games and have helped thousands of people, myself included. Not to mention they're both highly prolific authors with over 10 MB of work written up.

Not only this, but all three names whom you mentioned are regulars at this board and tend to be incredibly funny posters at times. In short, you have to work if you want to be well recognized. If you just beg for recognition in the way you're doing, you'll just be less recognized when you fit the proper criteria. I'm sorry, but this is the way it works, son.

YOu guys are getting at me all wrong. I enjoy FAQing and I do it to help people out. It's just I feel bad for those other people who start swearing at others (I have seen some) because that one person made someone's top 5 and he didn't. P.S. I write FAQs pretty quickly, over the last week I have gotten 1 FAQ submitted, 3 1/3 done, and I'm working on another one hardcore-like and I'm 1/2 done.

Not to be an ass or something, but you should spend some more time with your guides. I looked at the Midnight Club FAQ and it is still pretty barebone as far as in-depth goes. You have absolutely no strategies for the tracks, which is something a racing game FAQ should have. You also should work a bit on the formatting. I don't really know how that guide got the full circle status.

It seems hypocritical you say something like that. As far as I can tell someone made a topic wondering who everyone's favourite writers are... of course it died in time as all topics do without anyone really paying much attention. Now all of a sudden according to you it was this big thing and holy crap! and wam! bam! kablam! everyone hit the deck!

But you are TOTALLY not part of this. Thanks god. Oh no! No way! This topic of people "swearing at each other" and "sacrificing their life over", dear god how lucky you were to avoid it. In fact, I barely worked up the courage to look at the topic again, the hate was so predominant that it almost seemed to take the form of friendly conversation. Dear lord... such vile disaffection... you must KEEP IT AWAY FROM ME, I DON'T WANT TO BE SUCKED IN... PLEASE... THE HATE... KEEP IT AWAY... NO....

You know, the last person that bragged regarding how many FAQ's they were "churning" out ended up plagiarizing all their FAQ's.

I'm not saying that you are guilty of plagiarism but I do think you should be a little more humble about things and quit trying to impress everybody with your weekly "output".

Remember, quality, not quantity determines the ultimate success or failure of a FAQ writer.
